Congratulations! You've been accepted into a higher education platform that can be some of the best four years of your life. But, you have to balance between your social life, your well-being and your studies. Here are some tips that could've helped me when I was in your shoes.
1. Start studying now.
Truth is, all of your classes are going to be harder than your high school classes. Start studying at least a week before your exam a little bit every day and it will be less stressful in the long run.
2. Invest in a good, dependable laptop if you don't already have one.
Most of your classes are going to require online homework or require some sort of internet access. It's a lot easier when you're own instead of walking to the library everyday and hoping all of the computers aren't taken when you get there.
3. Go to office hours.
It's totally okay to ask your professors or TA's with any questions you have. You aren't being a bother. That's what they're there for!
4. Money doesn't grow on trees.
It's easy to spend money on food and get into a bad habit of it. Trust me when I say it adds up quick.
5. Don't be afraid to make friends.
Being introverted can suck when it comes to making friends, but it can be so helpful to have friends in the same classes as you. Even if you don't know the person you're sitting next to in class, introduce yourself! Everyone is trying to make friends.
6. Do the reading before class.
It's so easy to get caught behind on your reading for your classes. But, if you have already read it before class, learning the material will be so much easier when the professor is lecturing. It will also be easier when you're studying for the exam!
7. It's okay if you don't know what your major is.
You've probably been asked a thousand times what your major is before you even stepped onto your college campus. It's totally fine if you're undecided. Don't stress over it. You have some time before you have to declare it!
8. It's also okay to cry.
Being away from home for a long time can be stressful and heart breaking at times. It's okay to let out a good cry when you're stressed or when you simply miss your mom.
9. Your bad grade doesn't define you.
Everyone gets a "not so hot" grade every now and then. It's totally okay and it doesn't mean you're a failure at life.
10. You got this!
It can be scary when you're in a new environment with new people. But stay encouraged and don't let the first intimidating professor scare you into dropping the class. You can do this!
