10 Tips On Being A Good Roommate

Throughout college, and maybe even beyond, you will have your fair share of roommates. You have the choice to be a good roommate or a bad roommate (Hint: there is a right choice). Some people simply aren't compatible as roommates, and that is totally fine, but there are some steps you can take that will make you a better roommate for anyone you may live with!

1. Don't be a slob.

This one is pretty self-explanatory. You do need to be able to see your floor. That's just basic human cleanliness. Do your dishes if you leave them in the sink. Vacuum every once in a while. Clean your hair out of the drain. Dust your dresser. Change your sheets. Do your laundry. Function like a human being.

2. Keep it to your side.

If you share a bedroom with this roommate, privacy isn't much of an option, but cleanliness is! If you're a messy person in general and just can't seem to keep your stuff off the floor, keep it on your side of the floor. If you share a vanity for your bathroom, keep your stuff on your half. Only use shelves that are designated for you. Etc., etc.

3. Don't have people in the room constantly.

This goes for any kind of room set up. If you're bringing people over at 3 a.m. when you know your roommate has an 8 a.m. the next day, you're being a bad roommate. If everyone always pregames at your house every single weekend, you're not really taking into consideration the other people that live there. I can guarantee you every single person you're inviting over lives somewhere, so maybe go to their place for a change. Alternation is key.

4. Don't be up at weird hours.

Again, the 3 a.m. and 8 a.m. thing I said above applies, but don't wake up at 5 a.m. and call your boyfriend or something weird. If you come home late, be considerate. If you're an early riser, be considerate.

5. Don't make calls using speaker phone all the time.

Your roommate really doesn't want to hear your calls. If you are incapable of following this rule, go somewhere where you can close a door to make those loud ass calls. They're obnoxious no matter where you are.

6. Keep up with yourself.

Don't be the pity party your roommate has to come home to at night. Having a bad day or a bad week is one thing, but do things to take care of yourself. Make sure you're eating well, maybe workout every once in a while, go to class. Just do things to make you better and it will make everyone around you better, too.

7. Don't start unnecessary fights.

If there is no reason to get snippy, don't get snippy.

8. Followthrough.

Don't tell your roommate that you'll do the dishes tonight and then not do them. Don't promise to get your roommate something from Kroger and then not go.

9. If your room starts to smell, it's a problem. Deal with it.

SMELLS ARE NOT NORMAL. PLEASE get an air freshener, take out the trash, do everything in your power to make your room smell at least decent.

10. Keep your roommate in mind.

Keep in mind that you might be very different people. Learn how to live with each other. If they don't go to bed late, don't come in at 3 a.m. screaming. If they're not an early riser and you are, turn on a small light instead of the main one.

Just be considerate, and you'll be a great roommate.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
