For many of us, the semester is finally over, or close to it. It is finally time to pack up our belongings and make the final trip back home for the summer. But after nearly nine months of back to back classes, tight living quarters, early rising and food withing walking distance, it is time to go back home, where you spent your whole childhood. Still, somehow those nine months seem to erase what home life was like and we have a tendency to forget how grateful we are for the simple pleasures that home offers. Here are 10 thoughts college students have when moving back home for the summer:
1. Wow, shower pressure does exist.
This was the very first major difference I noticed when I got home. My first shower back home after a long semester of weak shower pressure was so soothing. You don't realize how important the little details are until you have gone so long without them.
2. How did all of my stuff fit in this house before?
Seriously, I am pretty certain I brought home more than I took, and I'm not sure how I ever fit all my clothes in my closet, because it looks as if I never left.
3. Where does everything go?
My biggest adjustment between home and college is finding a spot for everything. At school, everything was crammed in the same room, but it all had a spot and it was all very close together. At home, I have my stuff scattered all throughout the house, in various drawers and cabinets. I lose track of where I put things very easily.
4. Who do I stay up playing Call of Duty with now?
This sounds ridiculous, I know, but during the school year I relieved my stress by playing Call of Duty with my roommate. No matter how long the day or week was, I knew that several hours of screaming "Why isn't he dying!?" at the TV can take my mind off of anything.
5. When did she get pregnant?
Come on, we were all thinking it. You go away for 2 semesters and all of a sudden half of your graduating class is either, pregnant, married or both, while your biggest concern is waking up in time for class and keeping your GPA afloat.
6. Now I can sleep in all day...not really.
It is summer! That means no class and no obligations and you can just sleep the days away right? Well, as appealing as that sounds, most of us have other responsibilities during the summer, whether that be a job, babysitting, volunteering, online classes, etc. In other words, your still not sleeping in.
7. Oh boy, limitless home cooked meals!
It does not matter where you go to college, nothing beats a home cooked meal. We all could use a little more variety in our meals and a lot less grease.
8. Is it really a break if I have to work?
No, it is more just a change of pace. Fortunately, I like my job, so it is a bit of a break because it surely beats college, but I still have to get up and put my time in. That also means I can't do my own thing all summer. I have a schedule to work around. It is no different than scheduling activities around classes.
9. Is it really worth unpacking if I have to pack back up in 3 months?
This is probably the worst part of moving out. Not only do you have to pack, but then unpack when you get home and the whole time, in the back of your mind you realize that you have to do this process all over again in a few short months. Is it really worth it? Can't I just shove everything in a closet for 3 months?
10. Ha! High-schoolers still have a month left.
To top it off, this is a wonderful incentive, at least for me anyways. I have to pass all the schools to get and leave home everyday, so it is a little satisfying to see everyone else still in school while you are off doing your own thing. You have the privilege of doing all your errands early in the day, before school lets out, to avoid the chaos and the rush. Most importantly, however, is the reassurance you have for being a college student. Sure things get rough sometimes, but at least you get long breaks and a short year!
