Memorial Day is an annual holiday that remembers and celebrates those who lost their life fighting for our country. Memorial Day is also a holiday that elicits our gratitude for those currently protecting our freedom and the veterans who are still with us.
So, what will you do on Memorial Day? Here are a few ideas:
1. Teach our kids about it
It's very important that the younger generation understands the historical significance of Memorial Day. It's a day that honors all of the fallen men and women who protect our freedom daily. Children are so innocent and don't realize they're living in a country that is protected by brave men and women. I think teachers, parents, friends and other mentors can relay the significance of Memorial Day to children in a way that will spark appreciation and thankfulness.
2. Attend a local parade
Celebrate the men and women from your hometown who have served our country.
3. Eat a really good hot dog
What's Memorial Day without a good hotdog?
4. Visit a cemetery or museum
Many towns, cities, and other areas have educational museums that are very informative for individuals of all ages. Additionally, places like Arlington Cemetary could be an interesting and touching place to visit.
5. Tie-Die a t-shirt
It's always good to have a patriotic outfit planned!
6. Watch Memorial Day documentaries or TV specials
Just another way to be informed, learn and appreciate our heroes and the wars they fought in!
7. Make decorations
Make a wreath for your door, paint an American flag for your mantel, create arsty knick knacks for your porch!
8. Spend time with family and friends
All holidays should be spent with friends and family. Memorial Day is a perfect day to sit back and appreciate the things you have because of those who have protected our country.
9. Visit a veteran
Whether it's family or just someone who you know, go by and give them a visit! Let them know they're appreciated. Although Memorial Day honors those who have fallen, it's also an opportunity to appreciate those who have fought and are still with us.
10. Say thank you
Regardless of what you believe or your political affiliation, say thank you. Remember the thousands of fallen men and women who have given us our freedom. They are important and deserve to be thanked for their service. For the heroes who are in heaven, just say a little thank you prayer; they'll hear it.
Memorial Day is a time to honor those who have fallen and those who are still here. I hope everyone has a safe holiday!
