In Greek life, you learn a lot of things. You learn to recruit new members, you learn countless songs and chants for your organization, and you learn hundreds of rules and bylaws. But the most important things you learn are life lessons and values.
1. You learn a whole new vocabulary of words that no one else probably knows or cares about.
Words, phrases, and acronyms such as "lavalier," "frocket," "sratty," "pref," "frat rat," "the row," and "pnm" just don't make it past TSM. These colorful and sometimes words and phrases become a part of your everyday vernacular. Not to mention, you learn a whole new alphabet.
2. You learn responsibility.
You become responsible for representing your chapter on and off campus. You're always wearing your letters even when they aren't on your clothing. You are expected to behave a certain way and represent your chapter by doing your best in classes, study groups, organizations on campus, jobs, etc. You also learn responsibility by maintaining your GPA to your chapter's standards and completing study hours as well as service hours.
3. You learn tolerance.
Let's face it, you're not going to be BFFs with every single person in your chapter, but you still have to tolerate them because she is still your sister. It's a valuable life lesson because in your professional career, you're going to have to learn to deal with people who aren't exactly your favorite.
4. You quickly learn that Comfort Colors is the only T-shirt brand that even needs to be in existence.
None of that Gildan, American Apparel, or Fruit of the Loom garbage for you. It's CC or nothing.
5. You learn to be of service to others.
As a member of a sorority, you have learned the importance of serving your community. You give back to the community immensely by doing your own service hours, planning and participating in events for your philanthropy, and you're basically a volunteer/donor for several philanthropic organizations since you attend and participate in so many other chapter's philanthropy fundraisers and events.
6. You basically learn to be a parent.
You help take care of your sisters when they're going through a break-up, when they've failed a class, when their car breaks down, and when they need a confidence boost or a life chat. You also help your sisters of legal drinking age when they're in need of a designated driver or late night trip to Taco Bell. Bonus points if they cry while you're driving them because then you actually are like a parent with a toddler in the car.
7. You learn people skills.
During recruitment, you are constantly talking to strangers so it's a great time to brush up on your social skills and become less socially awkward.
8. You become a skilled artist.
From painting canvases, coolers, water bottles, wooden Greek letters, pin boxes, etc., you basically can paint anything. You're also pretty skilled at throwing together a theme costume with a few hours notice and a trip to Michael's.
9. You learn to budget.
Whether you learn this in a leadership position in your chapter or just by budgeting your dues, T-shirt money, craft money, new clothes money, etc.
10. You learn to live by your organization's opened and closed mottos.
There are several secret mottos, one for each organization, that we will all hold close to our hearts for the rest of our lives. These mottos will mold us into the adults that we will one day be in the near future.
