Growing up as an athlete I had particular checklists I had to go through in order to have everything I needed for lacrosse games, especially tournaments. No matter how prepared I was, I still had to go over my list, making sure everything was checked off. Before I really got into the groove of things this past season, (GO WILDCATS!) I had the following ritual.
1. Figuring out what is needed
Before you go and get ready, you need to know what is necessary to get ready. Do you need water, or Mom's freshly made cupcakes for the game?
2. Finding everything needed
Whether it be my lacrosse stick, back up stick, goggles, extra goggles, mouth guard, old mouth guard, sunblock, or my uniform, everything has to go in one place so I didn't lose anything.
3. PROCRASTINATING!
Procrastination was my a passion of mine! However, when I went to college I knew it was time for a break. We just weren't good together anymore. The relationship was toxic. Yeah, I miss it sometimes, but then I remember things are simply better this way and we weren't meant to be.
4. Freaking out if something is lost
It doesn't matter if it is "just a pillow pet." If I planned on having it, then it needs to come with me. What else am I supposed to cuddle with on long drives, the glove compartment?
5. Superstitions
Anything I think I need to do before a game will get done or else I feel awkward, and during lacrosse I don't have time for awkward when I need to feel awesome!
6. Getting to the game
There's nothing like the empowering feeling when I'm standing on the lacrosse field with nothing on my mind. With a clear mind I have plenty of room for me to focus on getting the ball to the back of the net.
7. Talking after the game
No matter what the conversation is about there's going to be a lot of left over energy after the game. Fun, tension, and excitement are going to be evident in most athletes after they play.
8. Eating
FOOD! FOOD! FOOD! After the adrenaline has worn off all I want is to stuff my face with a bacon cheese burger and a vanilla milkshake. After I talk to people for a bit I boycott any other human interaction until I get my hands on food.
9. Getting home
Getting home is such a relief because you can drop your gear and go do #10 ASAP.
10. Sleeping
Exercise plus eating equals an amazing equation for sleep, period.
