Starting college can be both exciting and scary. Although it can be fun figuring things out for yourself, meeting new people and learning to live on your own there are times when you feel overwhelmed and just need a manual on how to survive. Here are 10 things that I wished I had known while navigating through my first year in college.
10. It is alright to be undecided
During everyone's freshman year, you will all be thrown into the same gen ed classes so just explore! Do not be in a haste to select a major. Trust me you are not missing out on anything.
9. Pick your friends wisely
The friends you make help determine what you get out of your college experience. If you want a well-rounded college experience then, by all means, hang out with different people, not just people who are "like" you. Also, take advantage of diversity on campus, and get to know someone from a country you have never been too.
8. Make getting good grades a priority
It will only get harder from here, so get a solid start when you can.
7. Be ok with failing
It is perfectly okay if you fail a test. It will not ruin your life. You are still getting used to college and honestly, you are definitely not the only one who failed that exam if we are being honest.
6. Get to know your professors and make sure they notice you
There are a great many advantages that come with knowing your professors- a good reference is one amongst other things. Getting your professors to notice you is easy, answer questions in class, turn in assignments when due and show interest.
5. walk walk walk
Freshman 15 is not a myth, so skip the elevators and take the stairs when the opportunity arises.
4. Do not fall into the bottomless pit of fries
For those of you with a meal plan you already know that there is almost always fries in the dining. It is oh so easy to find yourself adding fries to every meal. try to replace fries with something healthy to keep off the extra pounds.
3. Take advantage of the discounts you get as a student
There are discounts available to students in grocery stores, shopping malls, and some services- just make sure to have a student ID with you.
2. Get to know someone in every class
Making a friend in every class means it is totally okay if you miss class (or skip) because your classroom buddy will have your back with what you missed.
1. Finally, take time alone for yourself
Do not forget to study when you need to, have fun and enjoy the ride. these are some of the best times of your life. You got this!
