Everyone has different circumstances when they take a break from school. So here are a few things to remember if you find yourself having to take a break from school when it’s the last thing you wanted to do.

1. It’s okay.

Your life isn’t falling apart, it’s just a bump in the road you never saw coming.

2. It’s okay to be upset

It sucks. It’s a position no one wants to be in when you’re working on your degree. You can cry, be mad, take up a new hobby, do whatever makes you feel better when you’re done.

3. You’re not the only person in that position

Whether you lost your scholarship, or your loans fell through, I promise you’re not the only person having that same issue. Hearing this doesn’t help when it happening.

4. Don’t settle into doing nothing all day, everyday

Get out and have fun, take a vacation, get a job, and find something that gives you a little bit of a responsibility. Like writing for the Odyssey!

5. Don’t blame anyone

Maybe a certain person is at fault, but it doesn’t mean it was on purpose. Something could’ve come up unexpected. Or maybe they didn’t go to college and really didn’t know what they needed to do until it was too late.

6. You’re going to miss it

You’re going to miss your friends. You’re going to miss your dorm. You’re going to miss going to events all the time. You’re going to miss your roommate. What I found most surprising, you may even miss going to class.

7. Its okay to be jealous

Watching your friends Snapchats and seeing pictures on Instagram and Facebook make it real. You see the parties you’re missing, the sporting events you’d probably be at if you were there, the events the clubs you were in are having, and you’re going to wish you were there.

8. A break doesn’t mean giving up

So many people assume that a break means that you’ve given up or that you’re just not going to go back. It doesn’t have to mean that, a lot of people have to take a break for so many different reasons.

9. Keep in mind you plan to go back to school

Whether you’re planning to go back to your original school or you want to transfer. Remember during your break that you’re going back to school. Work and have fun, but don’t forget the bigger picture, don’t get caught up in the amount of money you may be making at that point in time.

10. Have fun

If it’s an unwanted break from school, it feels horrible. You’re back to where you started and it almost seems like, “what was the point?” After a few days or weeks, you get a job, reconnect with your friends or make new friends, and things just seem to start falling together. Just because it’s not something you wanted, doesn’t mean it could be good for you overall.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
