10 Things To Know Before Dating An English Major

We English majors are a breed of our own. We have wants and needs that may be strange and different from the other majors that you have dated before. We may be harder to deal with, but that doesn't make us any less worth the chase. These are some things you should know before you choose to pursue an English major.

1. We need space.

No, I'm not talking about space from you. We need space for all of our books and space to be able to write. We love to read, and we love buying books. So, if you move in with somebody who is an English major, be ready to compromise some space for their books.

2. We love talking about books.

A majority of our life and free time is spent reading. Therefore, we have read many books. We also will want to talk about those books. Even if you haven't read the book, and you don't care to, at least listen and pretend to care.

3. We think deeper than surface level.

If you aren't the type of person that wants to think about life, love, and death, then you're in the wrong place. Our minds wander to these subjects often, and if we feel close to you, we will want to share every detail with you. Brace yourself.

4. We are blunt.

We spend a lot of time criticizing small things about people's writing, whether we know them or not. We tell them how we feel about it, and we don't hold much back. Therefore, we will most likely tell you how we feel about you without hesitation.

5. We will notice your grammar.

Our eyes naturally divert to poor grammar, so you can bet we will notice it, and we will judge you on it. Even more so, if you have good grammar, we will be impressed.

6. You will be written about.

A large amount of writing is romance-based. So, before you get into a relationship with an English major, know that when you do something good, and especially when you do something wrong, we will write about it. We feed off our emotions and we use them to write, and you will feed into a lot of our positive or negative emotions.

7. We will quote our favorite authors.

Not only will we quote our favorite authors, we will also expect you to know who said it, and what book it is from. Then, when you don't know, we will be disappointed.

8. We are honored to read your writing.

When somebody asks an English major to read their writing, it is like our opinion is trusted enough to place their writing in our hands. We will read anything you write, even if its a 20-page research paper. We would be honored to red pen all of your grammar mistakes.

9. We need physical space.

Many English majors you come across are going to be pretty introverted. Although we will be thrilled to have fun, quirky dates with you, we also need our alone time. That alone time is when creativity blossoms and we are able to do our thing.

10. We love deeper than any other.

English majors have read many books. Many of these books contain some sort of love story. Therefore, we know different types of love like the back of our hand. We are intuitive, we are empathetic and we are soulful. The relationship you have with an English major is going to be unlike any other. Even though there are some scary things that come along with English majors, it is definitely worth the time.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
