Social media has taken over the world with the force of an alien invasion. How could we live without social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram or Twitter? So, here's a message to millennials like myself (and everyone else addicted to social media): there's other stuff to do besides watch videos of cute puppies or bask in utter pride when your picture meets a new "likes" record! I know, I get joy out of both of these things as well, BUT, I am here to tell you that we can work together to a get a dose of dopamine from other joys in life! Here's how:
1. Whip out the old instrument.
That dusty ukulele in the corner won't play itself! Go on ukutabs.com and start with some easy songs, then gradually start to play harder ones.
2. Go to a used bookstore.
Start a new series for less than half the price! Amazon even has used books for 50 cents.
3. Look up some easy recipes to make with the random food hanging out in the pantry.
Peanut butter, banana, honey and cinnamon on toast = an easy, healthy snack!
4. Make a memory collage.
Take lots of pictures, print them out and make a collage to remember some of the best memories with your best friends! (Shutterfly.com can help for cheap!)
5. Plan a trip to the mountains.
Escape service and wifi for good! Plan a trip and rent a cheap house in the mountains with some friends, or with a club that you are in. Many colleges have an "Outdoors Club" or some type of club that takes group trips to great, remote areas. You could even treat yourself and rent a place in the mountains with a hot tub or game room.
6. Volunteer!
What better way to feel good than by giving to others? Visit your local homeless or animal shelter and ask what you can do to help!
7. Join a club.
Can you sing? Are you artistic? Athletic? Like to cook? No matter what your interests are, there is always a club to get involved in. Being in college, club involvement is only steps away. Additionally, you can always research clubs formed off-campus and see if any community groups interest you!
8. Sell/donate some old items.
Clearing out your room/apartment/house can also clear your mind. Selling and donating useless items can eliminate stress and may give you an excuse to buy a thing or two!
9. Host a movie night.
Haven't seen some old friends in a while? Want to get to know some fellow acquaintances better? What better way than to have a movie night with some drinks and snacks?
10. Create a new playlist.
Music is a great way to escape just about anything. Create a new playlist on Spotify for whatever mood you want to focus on!
Social media seems to be the route that just about everyone uses to feel happy these days. Unfortunately, it causes society to miss out on some of life's best gifts. Let's work together to put the phone down and pick up other hobbies and interests that make us happy!
