You don't really know what you need until you're there, especially as a freshman. You're going to look around your room your first night and think, "Shoot! I really need (blank)!" So, to help you avoid that (and avoid begging your parents to send box after box of items you forgot), here are 10 things you should bring to college.
2. Healthy Snacks
At 1:30 am, you're not going to want to go find a vending machine for a late night snack break. Or, if you have an 8 am class, it's nice to have some cereal and such there. Having some yummy snacks in your room is never a bad idea.
3. A Picture Collage
You're going to miss your friends and family (and dog) back home, it's inevitable. However, having a picture collage or two that reminds you of home (and your dog) will always make you smile. So, pick out your favorite pictures and take a glue stick, and make a collage!
4. Painter's tape
Throughout the month I've been here, I've already used my painter's tape probably a dozen times. You may want to hang pictures, a poster, or a homework calendar and you won't want to use any other tape besides painter's tape on dorm walls!
5. Macaroni bowl
Okay, it's a little random, but you don't have to use it for macaroni. This way, you don't have to use paper bowl after paper bowl if you want to put cereal or a snack in there. Super easy to wash and easy to store perfect for a college dorm!
6. Trash can
Some colleges don't provide a trash can, so bringing one is always a good idea. And if they do provide a trash can, get a recycling bin! If you get a wire trash can, don't forget plastic bags to put in it to catch those late night ice cream bowls.
7. Back rest
Not going to lie, when my mom suggested I spend ten dollars on a back pillow, I thought she was crazy. However, I've used it several times every day to do some late night reading, or just hang out.
8. Comfortable shoes
I know, your ten dollar shoes are not only a steal but super cute and go perfectly with everything. But think about it: you're walking to every single class. Do your feet a favor and invest in a pair or two of nice, supportive, and comfortable shoes. Birkenstocks are an amazing option!
9. Bed light
A clip light for your bed is perfect for those late night study sessions when your roommate is sleeping, or just as a little nightside lamp. There's a wonderful one at Bed, Bath, and Beyond for about $10 that is a great size, brightness, and (most importantly) price.
10. A raincoat
Sounds obvious, right? Well, I forgot to bring one/didn't have time to find one before I moved in and it has rained probably 45% of the time we've been at school. Once, I ran to the commons in the pouring rain and looked just about as happy as this cat. Just, get a raincoat. It's a great investment.
