After three full weeks in Rome, there are some things I miss about being in America. Here is a brief list of the comforts of home that I miss while I spend the year abroad.
1. Wifi EVERYWHERE
It is so hard to talk to people or know anything that’s going on in the world without the luxury of wifi. In Rome, wifi is few and far between, and I hate anyone with a data plan.
2. People who speak English
You take for granted being able to understand the world around you. Every day I come home exhausted from trying to comprehend this foreign language. However, Italian is probably the most beautiful spoken language so I really can’t complain.
3. Annie’s Mac and Cheese
Best. Food. Ever. There’s just nothing like an entire pot of mac and cheese to soothe your soul after a long day.
4. My mom and dad
Being 5,000 miles away from my two favorite people is kind of tough especially since they are having the time of their lives in Michigan. But it gives us a lot to talk about and even though I miss them terribly, they are always only a phone call away.
5. College Football
Missing out on my brother’s senior season as a Michigan Football player really sucks but I follow his games with live updates on my phone whenever I can scrounge around some wifi.
6. My bed
There is no comfort like that of your own bed at home and I miss being able to spread out. Twin sized beds are just not the same.
7. Wendy’s Sundays
Every Sunday, my friends and I would go to Wendy’s after a night of fun. I miss those car rides and hilarious conversations recounting the night before.
8. Driving a car
I miss the feeling of wind blowing through my hair while blasting my favorite songs and singing obnoxiously loud. But considering I’ve gotten into an accident with an ambulance, it is probably for the best that I can’t drive in Rome.
9. Dunkin' Donuts
The lack of iced coffee really gets to you when you’re sipping on a steaming hot cappuccino when its 90 degrees outside.
10. My friends
They may be fools, but they are truly missed halfway around the world.
Although I miss these comforts of home, Rome is much better than America. No offense. I’m so glad I get to live in a constantly moving city filled with history, adventure and fascinating people. Sorry mom, I’m never coming home.
