My coffee consumption isn't the only thing that's changed.

10 Things I Learned About Myself After Coming To College
Meghan Smith

Prior to college, you'll hear people tell you over and over that these are the years of self realization. It may start to sound like a broken record but hey, they aren't wrong! This past year after starting college, I have learned more about myself, whether it be of true significance or not, than I have throughout my last four high school years.

1. I’m more of a family person than I thought

Of course, I have always loved family time, but I took being with them every day for granted. Going from seeing them every day to every couple of months my love for my family has grown tremendously. Nobody gets me like they do and I love it.

2. I can go days without washing my hair... And still look good

We’ve all been there. Maybe it’s your hectic schedule or just your lack of motivation, but unwashed hair is definitely a norm of the college life. Luckily, we all understand and keep a no-judgement-zone for that three... Or four-day-old hair style.

3. Self-acceptance

From leaving the bubble of my hometown to being thrown into an independent lifestyle of the city, I’ve discovered how different people are, and it’s pretty awesome. I’ve learned to value myself and embrace my differences that bring me even closer to people.

4. I have dog depression

Coming from a home of two little pups, I find myself getting all teary eyed every time I scroll through my pictures of them. No matter where I am, I will stop and be that girl that asks to pet your dog. I’m sorry, but I am puppy-deprived.

5. Balance

Trying to balance a college workload, personal health, and a social life is definitely not the easiest task. No matter how chaotic things get, everything is going to work out. Put your best foot forward, stay organized and stop being so hard on yourself.

6. Unplugging

As if we didn’t already know, people tend to post highlight reels of their lives on social media. Removing myself for bits at a time works wonders. Not to mention, it is the magical cure for FOMO (aka fear of missing out).

7. Coffee coffee coffee

I may or may not be downing coffee like it's water — but my appreciation for a good cup of coffee has skyrocketed since starting college. It’s definitely become more of a necessity because of its zombie-mode curing abilities. There is never a time where coffee fails to put me in a happy-go-lucky mood.

8. Quality over quantity

It’s easy to get caught up with wanting a thousand new friends right off the bat when you start college but trust me, it’s okay to be picky. I’ve learned having a solid handful of girlies you can trust is way more beneficial than having a bunch that you can’t count on.

9. Alone time

Going from my own space at home to a shared dorm with three other ladies, I’ve learned to value my alone time. Don’t get me wrong, my roommates rock, but alone time is essential to really unwind and self-reflect.

10. Who I am

Most importantly, I have a better sense of who I am. I’ve realized I am among all the other young adults trying to find themselves and their passion and I have grown to love the process. I’ve seen how much I have grown and how much more I have to discover. I’ve learned to be the best version of myself at this very moment.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
