10 Things Future Teachers Have Heard

As a future teacher, these are some things that I have heard at least a million times. Those out there that are future teachers probably have heard all of these and can relate to the struggle of hearing these common lines:

1. "It takes a special person to be a teacher"

Yes, we know that it takes a special person to be a teacher. In order to be a teacher, you must have patience, and many other things, but that is not why we want to be a teacher.

2. " You better marry rich"

This one is probably the one that irritates me the most. I will not make my decision to marry a guy based on his salary. What my future husband has as a salary is not going to be the most important thing to me. Money is not what I am looking for in a guy.

3."You know you won't make much or be rich"

The salary you will make should not be the main reason you decide on a career. You should pick a career that you can see yourself loving for years to come and know you will enjoy. Teachers know that they won't be a millionaire, but still want to teach anyway. As most teachers and future teachers could agree that they want to teach for the outcome, NOT the income!

4."Why would you want to do that?"

I want to be a teacher for the same reason you are what you are. I enjoy it and just want to pursue a career in this occupation field. Being a teacher sometimes gets a bad reputation or negative viewpoint, but in reality, it is not.

5. " "I could never be around kids all day"

I am not you and this is why you are not a teacher or learning to become one! We are not all the same people, we each have our own preferences and likes and dislikes. It turns out that I can and want to be around kids all day!

6. "Do you really need to go to school for that?"

YES, YES, YES. People think that being a teacher is easy and doesn't require much background knowledge, but they are WRONG. Being a teacher isn't something that one can learn over night. You have to know how to plan a lesson correctly, know the laws and acts, know how to handle children, and have good classroom management. It is not the easiest major either!

7. " You're going to get sick all the time"

It is possible that I may get sick a few times throughout the school year, but it is not something that I will experience everyday or every month. I will be getting my flu shot, taking vitamins, going to the doctor if needed, and taking every precaution there is to avoid getting sick. This is another thing that I could put on my "I really don't seem to care about" list.

8." Isn't the principle the one who tells you what to teach?"

NO. The principle does have some guidance in what we teach, but it turns out that we have a state standard and guidelines that we follow and base our lessons off of. Nice try, but try again.

9. "You need more adult conversations"

Just because you are a teacher doesn't mean that you will not have adult to adult conversations. As a teacher, you will not just be stuck in a room with children to talk to. You will be able to talk to other teachers and staff throughout the day, as well as talk to family and friends outside of school. Children are not the only people we talk to.

10. "Good luck"

Thank you for telling me good luck, because education field is not as bad as you think it is. I will need the good luck in having children with good parents, lesson plans that flow, and luck in the field prior to actually becoming a teacher. I will be the childrens' biggest fan for 180 days of the year.

There you have it, 10 things that either teachers or future teachers have heard and will continue to hear them throughout their career as a teacher. Teachers are more than you think!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
