Pain is temporary, pride is forever.

10 Things Former High School Athletes Miss

In the moments of the blood, sweat, and tears, I never knew how much I would miss being a high school athlete. Looking back on it all now, these are the things I miss and totally took for granted.

1. Team Dinners

The only thing that motivated us to practice because we knew we could pig out in a few hours. From home cooked meals to pizza nights, team dinners were where we made some of our best memories.

2. Game Days

Wearing our uniforms to school so everybody else knew we had a game later that afternoon. The warm ups, the pep talks, and then the moment we waited all day for. Each game came with new challenges and new accomplishments. Nothing can beat the adrenaline during a big game.

3. The Coaches

No matter how many laps they made you run or how many times they screamed at you, they were always there for you. My coaches made a huge impact on me and helped shape me into the person I am today. Not only did they want you to be the best player you can be, but also the best person you can be.

4. Rivalries

Everyone who played high school sports knows there is nothing like playing your arc rivals. These games were the biggest of the season and got the most fans to attend. Beating them was the best feeling in the whole world.

5. The Work Out

Even though I'm pretty sure I complained during every single running drill, I never realized how in shape I was. Not playing a sport for the first time in years is hitting me hard. During it, it felt like the worst, but looking back, I was in the best shape and I wish that was still the case. (You were right, Coach.)

6. The Bus Rides

The best team bonding was done on the bus rides to away games. Inside jokes, stories, and many memories were made. Whether we were pigging out or crying after a loss, we were all in it together. I'll never forget the bus rides shared with my teammates.

7. Tournament/Playoffs

If your team was fortunate enough to make the tournament or play offs, it was the best part of the entire season. The hype was unreal and everyone wanted to slaughter the opponent. Between the extra practices and the strategizing, it was so intense.

8. Big Sister, Little Sister

Whatever you called it, when a JV and Varsity teammate were paired and gave each other goodie bags before each game and it was anonymous. At the end of the season you would find out who your was and it was always a great moment. Nothing gave you that extra boost of excitement before a game like receiving a gift.

9. Pep Rallies

Running through the gym with the rest of your peers cheering you on was such a rush. Decked out in your uniform and school colors while your school recognized everything you accomplished this season. They were a blast.

10. The Team

I will never forget the girls I played sports with and I miss them all dearly. We really did become one big family, we laughed together, cried together, ate together, and everything in between. We accomplished so much and came so far. These people were your extended family and not being apart of a team anymore is so hard. The teammates I had will forever hold a place in my heart and I cannot thank them enough for an amazing high school career.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register.
