Being a rookie to the gym is extremely intimidating.
It's confusing and nerve racking walking into a place where everyone is so confident in their workout routines and you are standing there as an outsider to their world, unsure of where to start or even what song to play on your iPod.
While it's a scary experience, there are a few things every beginner at the gym needs to know:
1. Everyone started right where you are.
Everyone has had to experience their first day at the gym. You're not going to be strutting around confidently like everyone else seems to be doing, but know that they were in your shoes on their first day too. They didn't just show up and know how to do everything the right way. They were insecure, scared, and nervous too. Someday you'll be strutting your stuff on the treadmill and someone will look at you enviously, wishing they knew what they were doing like you. It's the circle of life, really.
2. You can't expect immediate results. It takes time.
3. Don't try to do too much.
It's okay to take it slow and steady. Know your limits, but don't limit yourself out of fear. Listen to your body and do everything to the best of your ability, but don't try to sprint for an hour on the treadmill or lift ridiculously heavy weights starting out. You'll get hurt and you'll just set yourself up for discouragement. Build yourself up.
4. Don't worry about anyone else but yourself.
Put your head down, headphones in, and focus on yourself. Who cares that the person beside you is on their third mile and running faster than you thought the treadmill could go. Focus on what you're doing, and don't worry about others. Don't compare yourself.
5. Be proud of every little accomplishment.
Be proud that you went to the gym in the first place. Be proud for every minute you walk, run, or jog. Take pride in what you're doing to better yourself.
6. Do the workouts that you enjoy.
Find a way to enjoy your workouts. If you despise running, find another way to do cardio. There are tons of options available. If you hate your workouts you will despise going to the gym. Make it fun.
7. You are stronger than you know.
Don't ever limit yourself. You are capable of so much more than you think you are. Run the extra minute. Go the extra mile.
8. It gets better. You get better.
9. You will grow to love the gym.
10. Keep going.
Finish your workout. Reach the goal you set for yourself. Don't give up on yourself and your ambitions because I promise you will get there.
