10 Things I Make Sure to Enjoy Before Going Back to School

With a week and a half before I leave, I've done some reflecting.

I am now in the leg of winter break when everything is beginning to come to an end. Most of my friends are already on their way back to school, or very close to leaving, and I have about a week and a half to go. As the days begin to tick by until the day I return to campus, I have begun to think about what about home I am going to miss. This way, I'll be able to really take the time and effort to enjoy these things before I leave. Below are ten of the main things that I love and cherish most about home.

1. Time with Family

I am lucky to be able to say that I have an incredible family that I am very close with. Coming home from school always means spending plenty of time with them, so during my last week and a half at home, I'll make sure to enjoy them as much as I can.

2. Time with Friends

Unfortunately, most of my friends from home attend school at least four hours away from my school. It's very difficult to see them during the semester, so I will definitely make sure to spend as much time with them as possible before they go back to school themselves.

3. Local Amenities/Cuisine

New Jersey is notorious for its bagels and pizza. Because of this, I have very high expectations for both and will rarely eat either outside of my home state. That means that I have to eat as much of them both as I can before heading back South -- time to carboload!

4. Home-Cooked Meals

Nothing beats a home-cooked meal. Walking into a house smelling of fresh cooking is a feeling like no other and I will absolutely miss it when I get back on campus. For now, though, I'll be sure to enjoy every taste of my mom's meals.

5. My Own Bed

My bed at school is comfortable and all, but it will never beat my bed at home. First of all, my bed at home is twice the size of the twin in my apartment. Secondly, it just feels like home.

6. My Spacious Room

Sharing a room means having significantly less space than I am used to at home. At school, I do my best to stay organized and tidy out of respect to my roommate, but at home, where I do not share a room, I tend to throw things all over the place, knowing that I'll eventually clean it up.

7. My Car

Whenever I'm at school, I miss driving desperately. While I do love walking around campus, nothing can beat a good car ride. At home, I'm at liberty to drive wherever I need, even if it's down the street, but when I leave, I am without a car for a few months.

8. My Fully-Stocked Kitchen

It's amazing being able to open a cabinet and find exactly what I'm looking for. My fridge and pantry at home are seemingly always filled with treats and goodies right when I need them.

9. Lack of Schoolwork

Of course, returning to campus means returning to the world of classes and all of their horrors: quizzes, exams, homework, projects and sometimes worst of all, attendance. I may love what I'm studying, but I can't say that I am thrilled to have to go through classes again.

10. All of the Little Quirks of Home

There are so many little things about home that I am going to miss terribly. During these last few weeks, I'll do my best to enjoy every aspect of being at home. Maybe then I won't miss it so much.

I love school and I love being there, but I am also just as content at home. I know that as soon as I get back to campus, I am going to miss all of these things about my life in New Jersey with my family and friends here. For this last week and a half, I will dedicate my time to really enjoying every second of my experience home before I leave.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
