Even as a sophomore, the first week of class can still be incredibly stressful. 'Sylly' week –a time supposedly filled with fun and relaxation– is a myth, or maybe a reality for those that are blessed enough to not have hectic schedules. I, for one, am struggling with my first semester of my sophomore year. So far, within the first three days, I have refreshed the wait list check-in about 174 times, gotten lost on the way to buildings I've never heard of three times, questioned all plans for my future at least fifteen times, almost threw my computer out of the window because an hour's worth of math homework didn't submit and I had to redo it, and stained three shirts (so thankful for my Tide Stick). If you're having a week similar to mine, here are a few things that you've probably said.
1. "Where is this building?" "How have I never heard of it?"
This is especially an issue for bigger schools. University of Maryland's campus is 1,250 acres. There are areas of this campus that I doubt that I will see until I am a senior. Getting lost is way too easy, even for someone that has lived here for so long.
2. "Tell me that I don't have to walk up the stairs."
The biggest heartache is realizing that once you trek all the way to the class in East Jabib, you have to climb two flights of stairs to get to the classroom. I'm already sweaty and exhausted walking into the building, so I can only imagine how gross I am by the time I reach the top.
3. "This is why I didn't miss the dining hall."
Dining hall food has never been appealing. Now that I live in an apartment, though, I felt that not having to prepare my own food would make me appreciate the dining hall more. I was wrong.
4. "Do I really need this class?"
As I sat in Calculus I, attempting to listen to my professor speaking at the speed of light, this question repeated in my mind. Is it really necessary? Do I really need to come to this class every day?
5. "Is it too early to skip this class?"
Looking at my schedule, I'm already tempted to sleep later in the morning and ditch my earlier classes (even though I never would). The first week hasn't ended and I'm already losing motivation.
6. "Wait, I have to actually put effort into this?"
The worst feeling is realizing that a class that was supposed to be easy suddenly has weekly pop-quizzes, two exams plus a midterm and final, and a research paper. The easy-A you banked on is now probably your hardest class. Do you care? No.
7. "I can't wait to nap!"
You get yourself excited for a nap once you get back to your room, but that rarely happens. Why? Your friends want to hang out. Your planner is sitting on your desk reminding you that you DO have homework. You never have the time to relax.
8. "Can the weekend come already?"
And usually, you're thinking this on a Tuesday afternoon.
9. "Yes! I moved up two spots on the waitlist!"
The waitlist is an evil thing. At UMD, you have to check in every day in order to keep your spot. That is practically impossible when the Wifi gives out every other day. Or worse, when the Wifi is functioning but Testudo is down.
10. "Why does everyone else understand this?"
You're sitting in class and you have no idea what's going on. All of the people around you are nodding their heads and looking as though they understand. Don't be discouraged, they're probably just as confused as you are.
11. "OK, this is interesting after all."
At some point, it will finally click that not everything is terrible and that your classes will actually be as good as you hoped that they would be. They might just be a little more work. It'll be OK.
If you haven't had any of these thoughts during the first week of classes, I'm genuinely envious. Good luck and enjoy first semester!
