10 Things You Need To Know About Latinas
Kelly Cruz

Many things bring us Latinas together. These are 10 that you all should know.

1. We're incredibly proud

Our culture is of great importance to us. We love to embrace our culture, the music, the food, the history. All of it is who we are and we are not ashamed. Our ancestors have struggled, fought, and created a foundation for their future children, which is us. They have gone through hell and back to create a better tomorrow for us. For that, we are incredibly proud of who we are, where we come from, and where we are going.

2. Impossible is not in our vocabulary

Being proud also comes with striving for greatness. Tell us it's impossible and we will surely prove you wrong. We do not believe in impossible. With God, faith, and persistence, all things are possible. We work long and hard for what we deserve and we don't take no for an answer.

3. We don't let others treat us poorly

On that note, Latinas also do not take shit. We know when enough is enough and we will be straight with you. We don't have time for nonsense we're too busy building our empire. So please, step aside; if you are toxic we won't think twice and will cut you out of our lives and that's that.

4. We are overprotective, loving, and caring to those who full-heartedly deserve and have earned it.

If you are in our tribe you are safe as can be. We are very protective of our tribe. We do not deal with toxic people. We can sense fake and toxic people from miles away. Be real and sincere with us and we've got your back. Try stabbing us or someone we love in the back and you've got another thing coming to you.

5. The food

Trust me when I say my mom makes the best sopa de pollo or my grandma makes the best pupusas. Also, trust me when I say that my family makes the best tacos. If you haven't had our authentic typical dishes, you are missing out.

6. We have amazing role models

We have not made this journey on our own and we know this. Our role models have worked to their bare bones to get us here. Working hard in their own country trying to give their offsprings a better world to live in. Facing racism, language barriers, and losing loved ones along the way while trying to create a better future we have seen the struggles our role models have gone through.

Many of us come from a history of having to split from our family to protect one another, but many do not know this. Also holding this piece of history close to our hearts, we see our role models and only ever hope to be half the human beings they are.

7. We are confident and strong

We have to be confident and strong. We have no choice our ancestors have such a strong background. We as Latinas need to mirror that confidence and strength in our own lives and one day mirror it to our offspring. No one can bring us down not only do we have a strong personality, but we always have a strong tribe right behind us.

8. Family is ALWAYS first

Sorry honey, nothing against you, but we Latinas have a strong bond with our family. As always, blood is thicker than water. We not only strive for greatness but always make sure our family members are too. Please do not come in and try changing my family's ways. Can't accept my large, loud, loving, family? You can see your way out the door.

9. Equality

We Latinas are not playing games. We treat you with respect and expect the same back. We are loving and go out of our way to do things for you, but please do not try taking advantage of our sincerity. It won't end well. Please also do not try coming in thinking you will put us in our place, boy bye.

10. To us, language is beautiful

Are you speaking Spanish, French, Mandarin, English, German, Italian, sign language, and we don't understand? That's cool, speak your language all you want where ever, whenever you want. Be proud of your language, be proud of how smart you are knowing more than one language, and never let anyone tell you otherwise. We appreciate diversity and love hearing it through different languages.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
