10 Steps To Celebrating St. Patrick's Day (Even If You Aren't Irish)
Jessica Christian

I grew up as an average Irish-American. My middle name is Fitzsimmons and I did Irish Step Dance for a few years. I wasn’t as Irish as my friends who spent weekends at feisanas (the competitions) or the annual Oireachtas (the annual regional competition). But nevertheless, I take time at least once a year to celebrate my Irish heritage, and have found that many people thoroughly enjoy celebrating this day with me.

So, here is a guide, whether you are slightly Irish or not at all, that you can follow to be fake-Irish-for-the-day.

1. Get a Gaelic first name

First name: Siobhon (Shi-von), Seamus (Shay-mus), Cheile (Kay-lee), Eion (Owen), Meadheh (Maeve), Caoilin (Kay-lynn)

2. Alter your last name

Last name: add “O’” “Mac” or “Fitz” to the front of your last name

3. Time for a meal

This is the classic meal of corned beef and cabbage. If you grew up Irish-American, St. Patrick’s Day is the one time of the year where your mom brought out this recipe.

4. And of course, Irish soda bread

If you aren’t eating good Irish soda bread on this day, you’re doing it wrong.

5. Eat potatoes

Potatoes are a staple to the Irish, so eat as many as you can today!

6. Learn an Irish dance

We can’t all be professionals, but find a little jig to have fun with to celebrate this dance culture!

7. Wear green

Don’t stop at regular clothes! Get headbands, stamps, tattoos, socks, and everything you can think of—be creative!

8. Maximize the shamrock accessories

This is such an important symbol for this holiday, so you have to put the most shamrocks you can on your person.

9. Tell people “kiss me I’m Irish!”

It’s a classic phrase. If you’re only partly Irish, you can say “kiss me I’m Irish-ish!”

10. Drink Guinness

It’s a classic everyone love—from the Irish to Irish-Americans to Americans.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
