Although most of us can agree that 2016 was a terrible year in general, the music did not fail to satisfy. Whenever we had a bad day, music was one of the ways we could cheer up. Some songs on the radio were great, but here are 10 songs from last year and beyond that you'll wish you'd heard earlier.
1. "Cold" by Mating Ritual (ft. Lizzy Land)
The song, released in March 2016, has a calm yet face-paced rhythm that keeps the listener on their toes but relaxed at the same time. The cover art looks really cool, too! Click here to listen to it on SoundCloud.
2. "90210" by Blackbear (ft. G-Eazy)
If you're having a tough day, this 2015 song is guaranteed to make you feel at ease. 90210 is the zip code for Beverly Hills, California, and even just imagining being there would make anyone's day a million times better. Click here to hear it on SoundCloud.
3. "Ordinary Life" by The Weeknd
In November 2016, The Weeknd released his newest album "Starboy", and this is one of my favorites from the list. He has been frequently compared to Michael Jackson's voice and style of music, especially in his more recent songs. Regardless of who he sounds like, this is definitely of one my favorites from 2016. 4. "Bright" by Echosmith
This song was on the radio, but rarely. For a more acoustic song, this is the perfect blend of guitar and soft vocals. It was released off their album "Talking Dreams" in 2015, and it featured the lead singer, Sydney Sierota. The band is comprised of four siblings, and they were able to have this song reach the Top 40. Click here to hear it on YouTube.
5. "Flashes" by Tove Lo
If there's any singer that has caught my attention from the start, it's Tove Lo. On October 28, 2016, she released her most recent album "Lady Wood", featuring the songs "Cool Girl", "True Disaster", and "Influence". The entire album is amazing, but "Flashes" stood out the most compared to the rest. Click here to hear it on YouTube.
6. "Falling Away" by Glades
Glades is an Australian alternative pop trio starring members Karina Wykes, Cam Robertson & Joey Wenceslao. Personally, they are my favorite band, well-known for their hit song "Drive". Imagine floating on a cloud because that is exactly the feeling conveyed through their dreamy tunes. Click here to hear it on Spotify.
7. "New Love" by Dua Lipa
Known for joining Troye Sivan on his recent tour, Dua Lipa is a British singer whose music genre has a wide variety. I love this song because it releases a slight "vintage" vibe that I haven't heard that much in many other songs. Even the music video fits the mood and lets out a nostalgic feeling. 8. "Hurts So Good" by Astrid S
This song is one of those where no remix can beat the original. The song has a trap beat, but it's complimented by pop-style chords. She has a higher pitched yet strong voice, and along with the tune itself, this really should be more popular than it is. Click here to watch the artsy music video, or click here to listen to it on Spotify.
9. "Wildfire" by Demi Lovato
For a long time, I couldn't seem to find that one song that I would never stop loving (even if I played it until my ears started to hurt), until I found this song in the middle of the night. This comes off the album "Confident" that featured lots of other great songs, so click here to hear this tune on Spotify.
10. "The Beach" by The Neighbourhood
From the same band that sung and performed "Sweater Weather", this song never fails to help me relax. The Neighbourhood is well-known for their plain, black-and-white theme and their laid back songs with lyrics holding a deeper meaning. The leader singer, Jesse Rutherford, tells a different story in each song, one which the listener has to interpret in his/her own way. Hopefully 2017 brings us more great music. Happy Listening!
