Most of the people that I know think that country music is "horrible," and "makes people's ears bleed." As a very liberal, Hispanic and Asian female, I don't necessarily fit into the typical demographic that people assume country music lovers fall into. However, my immigrant parents made sure that I listened to the music of the country that I was growing up in, along with the music from their countries of origin. I love country music because it's a part of my awesome childhood. Listening to it makes me feel so American.
Many people claim that country music can be sexist, but can you name a genre of music that doesn't have some songs that objectify, sexualize, and disrespect women? I can't. I am a huge feminist, and I think this is an issue in EVERY genre. I love non-sexist country, country that treats all individuals as equals. That's not all of it, but there is no genre that doesn't have songs that portray sexist messages. It's about finding the songs that do not portray sexist, disrespectful, and misogynistic messages in every genre. Before you decide to hate country music for sure, give these ten (100% NOT sexist) songs a chance; you may be surprised by the catchy beats and beautifully told stories.
