10 Songs For People Who Never Gave Country Music A Chance
October Country Film

Most of the people that I know think that country music is "horrible," and "makes people's ears bleed." As a very liberal, Hispanic and Asian female, I don't necessarily fit into the typical demographic that people assume country music lovers fall into. However, my immigrant parents made sure that I listened to the music of the country that I was growing up in, along with the music from their countries of origin. I love country music because it's a part of my awesome childhood. Listening to it makes me feel so American.

Many people claim that country music can be sexist, but can you name a genre of music that doesn't have some songs that objectify, sexualize, and disrespect women? I can't. I am a huge feminist, and I think this is an issue in EVERY genre. I love non-sexist country, country that treats all individuals as equals. That's not all of it, but there is no genre that doesn't have songs that portray sexist messages. It's about finding the songs that do not portray sexist, disrespectful, and misogynistic messages in every genre. Before you decide to hate country music for sure, give these ten (100% NOT sexist) songs a chance; you may be surprised by the catchy beats and beautifully told stories.

1. "Chicken Fried" by Zac Brown Band

"It's funny how it's the little things in life that mean the most, not where you live, what you drive, or the price tag on your clothes. There's no dollar sign on peace of mind, this I've come to know."

2. "Ready To Run" by The Dixie Chicks

"When the train rolls by, I'm gonna be ready this time."

3. "9 To 5" by Dolly Parton

"I'm pourin' myself a cup of ambition."

4. "So Small" by Carrie Underwood

"Love is all that matters, after all."

5. "Life Is A Highway" by Rascal Flatts

"Life is a highway, and I wanna ride it all night long."

6. "Follow Your Arrow" by Kacey Musgraves

"Make lots of noise. Kiss lots of boys, or kiss lots of girls if that's what you're into."

7. "Wanted" by Hunter Hayes

"I wanna hold your hand forever and never let you forget that you'll always be wanted."

8. "I Hope You Dance" by Lee Ann Womack

"And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance, I hope you dance."

9. "The House That Built Me" by Miranda Lambert

"You leave home, you move on and you do the best you can."

10. "Some Days You Gotta Dance" by The Dixie Chicks

"Some days you gotta dance, live it up when you get the chance."

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
