Growing up, summers meant packing up your belonging and venturing off to the Pocono Mountains, upstate New York or Maine. These forested locations were the birth place of thousands of memories, friendships and laughter. Here are 10 ways to know you went to overnight camp:
1. You live “10 months for 2.”
This phrase was not only said by every camper, but was also on t-shirts, hats, towels and posters. If your shirt didn't have the phrase "10 for 2," it had any other phrase about how much you love camp.
2. You put your camp zip code or age group/division in your Instagram bio.
As a camper, it was essential to let every follower know where you went to camp. Additionally, this would help you get followers if people saw that they went to the same camp as you in their bio.
3. You thought ANY trip out of camp was the biggest deal.
Whether the trip was to the local ice cream store or a far away trip to Boston, any excuse to take a quick break from camp was the best.
4. You created a new groupchat with your counselors AS SOON as the summer ended.
Some camps had CITs and others had counselors, but either way a new groupchat was a necessity at the end of the summer. A new groupchat meant a new opportunity to tell your besties when you posted an Instagram.
5. You thought everyone you saw after camp went to your camp.
When traveling to the Margate shore after camp it was common to think that every person you passed went to camp. In reality only about 40% of the people you saw actually went to camp with you.
6. You LOVED flirting with the foreign counselors.
A new summer meant a new batch of Aussies or Brits to enter your camp. You would be lying if you didn’t love to talk to the foreign lake, pool or tennis staff.
7. You cheered in the dining hall.
In order to be called up for food, cheering was a necessity. If it was one of your favorite meals, you had to scream extra loud in order to be called first. If the meal was REALLY good then you would wait and wait in the dining hall for seconds to be called.
8. You viewed Visiting Day as a national holiday to get every junk food to ever exist.
Every parent brought out their best “I miss you” package when visiting day rolled around. You would comprise super long lists of every food item you ever wanted in the hopes that your parents would buy them all… and they would.
9. You felt 10 times more athletic in camp than in the real world.
Camp was a time for average athletes to all of a sudden shine. Whether it was during the annual basketball game or sports leagues, everyone experienced some sort of fame. Some even had the opportunity of gaining “athlete of the week.”
10. You lived for dressing up in your team’s color for color war.
Having the coolest color war outfits was a must. Everyone wanted glitter eyeshadow, rhinestones or fishnet gloves. Parents would send baskets filled with accessories and once teams were established you would immediately trade items.
