10 Signs You Grew Up In Louisville

There’s an undeniable sense of unity among people from Louisville, Kentucky.

We like our chicken fried, some ponies to ride, and repping our home town pride. But being from Louisville means so much more than that. Contrary to popular belief, Louisville ranks among one of America’s fastest growing cities and has worked hard to put itself on the map. And we couldn’t be prouder. Yes, we’re much more than overall-wearing barefoot hicks who marry our cousins.

For those of use from Louisville, here are the 10 signs that we grew up in this fabulous city:

1. We undoubtedly claim Jennifer Lawrence as our own. It’s as if every Louisville citizen knows her personally.

“Hey did you see that new Jennifer Lawrence movie?”

“Did I see it?! Of course I saw it, she’s from Louisville.”

2. Along with Jennifer Lawrence, we undoubtedly claim any other celebrity from our hometown.

Diane Sawyer? Yeah we know her. Bryson Tiller? 502 Come Up is our anthem.

3. There are only two sports teams that matter when you live in the state of Kentucky, let alone Louisville.

The Louisville Cardinals or the Kentucky Wildcats. Choose wisely, keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

4. The Kentucky Derby is so much more than a horse race.

The Kentucky Derby is a national holiday, and our calendar year revolves around this event. The first Saturday of May, the holy day.

5. Constantly reminding people that it’s pronounced “Looavul."

Not “LouEville," “Looaville," or “Luhvul." How hard can it be?

6. You know to never trust any weather forecast and to prepare for all elements despite the season.

From snow in May to 70 degrees in December, you really never know what could happen.

7. You know almost everyone, yet you could meet new people at any given moment.

The feel of a city and small town all rolled into one.

8. And whenever you do meet someone new from Louisville, your first question is always where they went to high school.

9. You’ve shamelessly hit every touristy spot in the city.

The walking bridge, “Before I Die” wall, Muhammad Ali Center, Louisville Slugger, you name it.

10. You realize how great of a city Louisville actually is, and whether or not you decide to come back, it’ll always hold a special place in your heart.

See you in the ville.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
