In the world of fitness technology, one brand has really taken over - the wearable fitness tracker, Fitbit. Coming in different styles and colors, this sporty bracelet knows more about your health than your mother. And this past Christmas I joined the Fitbit world (or maybe cult is a more accurate word). Shortly thereafter the rest of my family also joined up. It's that addicting. Now it is the one accessory I don't leave without in the morning and if I do, I go back for it, cursing the whole way for all the uncounted steps. Being a member of this obsessive group I can say it's pretty easy to spot another Fitbit lover. Just look for the tell-tale wrist tap.
1. You are obsessed with your "steps."
Your life and all its activities revolve around how many steps a given action will gain you. And you never go anywhere without your Fitbit, because a step not counted by the hawk-eyed bracelet is a step not taken in your mind. If you happen to forget your Fitbit, you either double back instantly or curse yourself for the entire day of steps you lost.
2. You are always tapping your wrist.
The constant wrist tap is another daily part of your life as you are constantly checking up on your stats to see just how many calories you have burned and how many flights of stairs you have climbed. Sometimes you do it to check the time or date but as we have already established, steps are what really count.
3. You go out of your way for more steps.
You are the person who takes the long way just to get more steps. You have found yourself taking extra trips up and down the stairs just to get that much closer to your step goal. Having a low step day is not acceptable to you, so you do every little thing possible to rack up those steps if it takes twenty minutes longer to reach your destination.
4. You get super competitive with other Fitbit owners.
You are super competitive with your friends on Fitbit. You are always syncing to your phone and checking the charts to see who is in the lead. You know that one bad day can set you behind in the 7-day step charts for a week and that being on top of the chart is really something to be proud of.
5. You always take the stairs.
You don't even think of the elevator or escalator as options anymore because they don't give you steps like the stairs do. You have also given up all other things that don't contribute steps like stationary bikes. On the bright side, all the stairs have really helped shape up your legs.
6. You are acutely aware of your heart rate.
If you own one of the Fitbits with the heart rate monitor then you are always checking and stressing about your heart rate. You are constantly tapping to see if its too high or low and are obsessed with what your resting heart rate is and what it should be and if this means you have a disease.
7. You are goal obsessed.
Your favorite part of the day is when that tiny band of plastic vibrates telling you that you have reached your step goal for the day. You will walk around extra just to get that feeling. But you also work hard to meet all your goals and make all the tracking stat bars on the app become green with success.
8. You know exactly how good or bad you slept.
You wake up each morning and sync your Fitbit and read up on how you slept. You are always informed as to how many hours you slept and how many times you woke up. And sometimes the stats are so bad you wonder if you have even slept at all.
9. Losing your charger is the end of the world.
Your Fitbit charger is a precious tool you guard carefully. Without it, after a few days, you end up with a useless bracelet and no ability to keep track of your steps. You only charge it when your sleeping or sitting as not to let precious steps go by without being counted.
10. You wonder how you lived before the Fitbit.
You think back to your life before your Fitbit and wonder how you even existed in those dark ages with no device to encourage you out of spite and competitive to action. You're not really sure if your Fitbit has made you any fitter but it sure has made you more aware of your movements and way crazier.
With these things in mind be wary before you join the Fitbit community. It is a ruthless gang full of charger stealing, sneaky step getting, and angry face emojis. It can bring people together and tear them apart. You have to be ready to tie your life to a tiny little machine on your wrist. You have to be willing to tell it your most secret personal life details like weight and age. And even then all you will get out of it is sore feet and the occasional feeling of triumph.
