I remember as a kid being told on the playground that I needed to put some meat on my bones.
You probably giggled, and now I can too. But having your body critiqued in 4th grade is tough. My drawstring shorts were always tied with an extra knot just so they wouldn't find a home toward my ankles. The New Balance sneakers I had always looked two sizes too big compared to my thin limbs. And shopping for any type of pants was nearly impossible.
From then on the remarks haven't stopped. Do I eat healthy? No. Do I eat three meals a day? Yes. Do I eat snacks? Heck yes. Have I ever had medical issues that affected my weight? Nope. Is it your business to ask how much I weigh? Absolutely not.
I've heard everything in the book, and maybe you have too. If there is one thing I want you to understand is a body is beautiful whether it is overweight, underweight, tall, or short. We all have flaws and just like you would never point out someone's flaws if they were overweight, same rules apply for asking people questions about their thin frame.
Here are 10 remarks you've heard if you're naturally thin:
1. Eat a cheeseburger.
2. Gain weight.
3. Strong is better than being skinny.
4. How do you stay so skinny?
5. Are you okay, because you look too thin?
6. If I looked like you I would eat whatever I wanted.
7. Enjoy it now because one day it will all catch up with you.
8. Have you always been this skinny?
9. Being called "skinny".
10. The words used to describe your limbs. Chicken arms, bony, sticks, etc.
Whether you are overweight, underweight, tall or short, we all have remarks that scream at us when we look in the mirror. What is yours?
