10 Reasons Why Joining Greek Life Is the Best Decision I've Ever Made
Hannah Gabaldon

Coming into college freshman year knowing little to no one can be a huge shift for many people. While I was super excited to start a new chapter in my life, I was also really scared. Being away from my family, having to meet all new friends, and being away from the home I’ve always known. As soon as I saw registration for greek life come along, I knew I wanted to be a part of it. Here is why 'going greek’ was the best decisions I have ever made.

You meet lifelong friends

Joining Greek life, I knew I would meet so many amazing people, but I can’t even begin to explain how thankful I am to have met some girls I know will be lifelong friends, or should I now say, sisters. College truly would not be the same without my best friends by my side 24/7, and I can only thank Greek life for introducing them to me.

You learn who you truly are

I have to agree that your college years are the years you learn the most about yourself. While in high school I always was true to who I was, college has helped me find even more people that bring out my true self. Nothing is better than that.

You learn how to be a leader

Whether you are on the executive board or not, you learn what is takes to be a leader. Seeing all the behind the scenes work that is put into sorority events and seeing how the sorority is run truly teaches you not only how to communicate and prepare you for your future after college, but most importantly, how to be a leader.

You are opened up to new things

Being introduced to so many new things in college may seem overwhelming at first, but I can honestly say I have learned more in this past year than I have in my entire life. Whether it is learning that tequila shots are not your friend, or that arriving "fashionably late" is not always the best idea, greek life has taught me so much from all the experiences I've had and all of the things I have learned.

You get pushed out of your comfort zone

Being in Greek life has taught me that it is okay to go outside of your comfort zone. Before college, I was always afraid to do things that scared me or that I thought might embarrass me, but being a part of Greek life has shown me that going outside of your comfort zone is how you meet the best people, make unforgettable memories, and learn the best lessons.

You have instant connections

Greek life being nationally recognized means you have instant connections with not only everyone in the Greek community at your school, but also with thousands of other people such as friends at other colleges, Greek life alumni, and even connections after college while in the work force.

You always have a shoulder to cry on

No matter what may be going on in your life, you know you always have your sisters there if you ever need a shoulder to cry on. This year, I went through some of the hardest times of my life and I thought I would never go back to school, but since I had my sisters there by my side to bring my spirits up and be there for me- I made it. So beyond thankful for the sisterhood I am a part of.

You get involved on campus

Philanthropy is one of the best parts about Greek life. You can't go wrong with hanging out and having fun with the people you love, all while supporting an amazing cause. Besides philanthropy, Greeks are very involved on campus whether it is through volunteering, supporting other chapters, or even just wearing their letters to class!

You get the best advice

With 4 different age groups all in one organization, you get so much great advice from your sisters. Whether it is advice about your major, plans after college, boys, if you should really eat that last piece of pizza (duh)...pretty much anything and everything you can think of, one of your sisters has been through and can help you out.

You find your home away from home

Before coming to college, I would have never thought that I would consider my college town my home. I've only been here for less than a year, and I can already confidently say that I can call this place my home. I wouldn't trade my sisters for the world.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
