This is my pet fish. His name is Ben.
Ben is great. Here are the top 10 reasons to get a pet fish in college.
1. It’s likely the only pet you can get.
Colleges generally don’t allow any other kind of live animal in university housing.
2. They’re incredibly low maintenance.
My fish lives in a small glass bowl. I dump out the water and refill it with filtered water every 4-5 days, and I feed him a few pellets once a day. Effortless.
3. They’re also super cheap.
All you need to buy is the fish, fish bowl, and food.
4. They’re there when no one else is.
They can’t run away.
5. You have their undivided attention.
My fish is always staring. Can’t get enough of me. They listen to all your secrets without judgment.
6. They play games, too.
When my fish looks bored, I put a mirror in front of him. He sees his reflection and his aggressive nature comes out.
7. Great desk decoration.
They’re great to look at and watch when you’re spacing out at your desk.
8. They’re peaceful.
The only sound I ever hear from Ben is some loud chewing sounds. He doesn’t disrupt my studying or sleep.
9. No mess or smell.
Whatever excrement comes out of him stays contained in the water of the bowl.
10. Funerals are easy.
Face it, fish don’t live as long as people. But when it does die, just flush it down the toilet!
