Uh oh. That dreaded moment has come when you don't feel well and you actually have to be an adult and drag yourself to the clinic at school because your mom isn't there to force you to go. You arrive and realize how absolutely crappy the clinic is and that this is probably a huge mistake, so you go home and hope that whatever is happening doesn't kill you. The fact that we would rather choose this option than seek medical attention really shows how terrible the clinic is.
I went around and asked friends who go to different universities to tell me their experiences with their university health care centers and this is what they had to say:
1. Their solution to everything is that you're pregnant and if you say you aren't, they ask you 3 more times just to make sure there really isn't a baby growing inside of you.
2. If you're sick, they give you Sudafed samples and wish you the best.
3. They close at 5 on the weekdays and aren't even open on the weekends. (WHERE'S THE FREE SUDAFED HOOKUP THEN?!)
4. "Are you sexually active? If you are, why? If you aren't, why?"
5. They care more about their image than your health.
6. The line to check out is always so ridiculously long that by the time I make it up there, I've aged a few years.
7. They prescribe you something that you're allergic to even when they just asked if you're allergic to it (a.k.a they want to kill you)
8. They are not quick thinkers and if you don't feel good, go home or fly to another country because you're probably better off.
When you're in college and you're on a budget and you're ill, your only hope is to go to the center, especially if you're very far from home. This should be a safe haven for people, a place that they can trust. There are so many issues all over the U.S. with clinics and that's a scary thing to hear about. We shouldn't be afraid and we shouldn't have to resort to going elsewhere for medical attention. It's health clinics take these comments into consideration and step up their game. Our health comes first.
