10 Honest-To-God Perks Of Being The Younger Sister
Alyssa Pallmeyer

Growing up, I was always thankful to have a sibling that was older than me and even more thankful to have a sister.

I also am grateful to say that my sister and I get along really well and really never fight. With that being said, there is not a time I can remember that I wished I was the older sister because being the baby is so much better.

1. Double the closet

I felt so cool in middle school because my sister was never home so whatever clothes she had in her closet, she allowed me to wear. She had clothes that were not popular for my age group yet, so I was wearing them before they were actually in.

2. Exposure to what was popular to them growing up

I will forever be thankful to have been exposed to the pop culture that my sister grew up with. There is something about early 2000's music that cannot be topped. I always felt so grown up for listening to hit radio stations and not just Radio Disney (which was THE station listen to in elementary school).

3. Someone that's always on your team

This is great because I know that my sister will always be on my side to stand up for me if someone tries to bring me down.

4. It's fun and easy to annoy them.

Of course growing up (and even now) I know exactly what to do to annoy my sister. When I was younger I would always tattle on her even if she didn't do anything so she made up her own nicknames for me that didn't make sense. When I would go to tell my mom she would just dismiss it. Clever thinking Kristen!!!

5. Someone that understands your parents

If I am ever irritated by something my parents said to me or if they do something weird and I want someone to laugh about it with me, my sister is my go-to gal.

6. Playing "the victim" card

I will never forget the times that my sister would joke around with me and tell me things to scare me. How did I respond? By telling my parents she was being mean of course!

7. Hanging out with people older than you

I always felt so cool for "being friends" with my sister's friends when I was little. I remember her friend was on the high school dance team, and I thought I was special for knowing a girl in high school. Also, did my sister even have a good time with her friends on the days I didn't make a guest appearance?

8. Someone who has already been through it.

Thankfully, my sister has already gone through pretty much everything that I am going through now. This awesome because she can help me with homework and give me advice on life and how to make the best decisions for me.

9. Someone to look up to.

I would be lying if I didn't make a good chunk of my life decisions based on what my sister did. Of course, I always looked up to her, so if I had the opportunity to do something that she did, I took it. The whole reason I discovered my passion for music was because I copied her and took the viola over any other instrument in school.

10. An automatic best friend

Whenever I have the opportunity to hang out with my sister these days, I take it. We don't see each other too often due to us living in different states, but whenever we do hang out, it's always a good time. It's also a nice perk that she lives in D.C. because there is always something to do. There's never a dull moment when it comes to the two of us considering we could laugh for hours!

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
