As Spring semester of 2017 wraps up, you may find yourself reflecting on the year you've had. In a world that sees 4.0’s and high paying jobs as the ultimate goal, it’s easy to forget that those aren’t the only things that measure your success and personal growth. Don’t underestimate the importance of the things you did that can’t be quantified or fluff up your resume. Here are just a few things you may have done to remind you you’re doing better than you may think!
1. You made friends.
It’s easy to feel content with your friend group. If you’re like me, you don’t feel any need to chat with the people next to you in class; but maybe you did anyway. Or maybe you had a study buddy, or got along great with a friend of a friend. If anyone came to mind just now, you have succeeded!
2. You are more confident in your career path.
There’'s tons of pressure to pinpoint exactly what you want to do with your life at such a young age. It’s extremely common to doubt, reconsider, and change your major/career choice. So, if you have the same plan as you did last year or ended up changing it, as long as you feel good about it there’s nothing more to be said or done.
3. You kept smiling.
Even when your boyfriend or girlfriend was a jerk, your friends made plans without you, or you made a bad grade. If you kept a good attitude when it might have been tempting to get all up in your feels you should be happy with yourself. You’ve got high emotional intelligence. Don’t underestimate yourself!
4. You learned something.
All too often we sit in class thinking “Why am I here? This won’t help me in the real world”, or maybe we don’t pay attention at all. Perhaps one class you took really left an impression—maybe it was just one lesson. Maybe you really messed up or made a huge mistake. It’s okay, friend. These are your chances to learn and grow as a person.
5. You stepped outside your comfort zone.
Everyone has a different comfort zone, thus there are countless different ways to define this. Living away from home for the first time, interviewing for a job, riding in an airplane, or just raising your hand in class may have been your way. Whatever it was, you survived! Don’t be afraid to push yourself even further!
6. You’re proud of something you did.
Few things feel better than knowing you nailed a presentation or wrote an awesome essay. Maybe you did a good deed or followed through with something you never thought you could. Whatever it may have been, remember how great it made you feel. Let that feeling push you to more success in the future.
7. You feel like you did your best.
Look, we are all trying to do the same thing. Everyone wants to become independent, make something of themselves, and make their whole family proud. Maybe your grades weren’t perfect or you didn’t get that job you had your heart set on. But if you truly feel like you tried your hardest, then all you can do is keep it up. If in your heart you don't feel that way, you know what you gotta do! Your best is good enough. Wherever it may put you.
8. You have stories to tell.
I hate being put on the spot. If someone asks me what my favorite movie is, I literally cannot remember a single movie title. Same goes with stories. If I’m asked to name the funniest or most embarrassing or saddest thing that’s ever happened to me, it’s as if it’s my first day on Earth. Try to think. What was the funniest thing that happened this year? Happiest moment? What was the biggest lesson you learned? Believe it or not, there are answers for all these questions, you just gotta sort ‘em out!
9. You made thoughtful decisions.
Life can be sink or swim. You can eat fried food every meal, ignore your responsibilities, and go out every night. For all the times you ate healthy or stayed in to study and get work done, kudos to you for making a better decision for yourself.
10. YOU MADE IT!
YAYYYY the academic year is over! You did it! Another year down, another year closer to graduating, getting that promotion, or being exactly where you’ve always imagined yourself.
Listen. You define your own level of success. Success doesn't always equal happiness, but happiness certainly equals success. You are worthy of both. Keep yourself as your top priority and see where that may take you a year from now.
