Almost everyone wants to go to Paris, London, and Rome, but what about other lesser known cities? There are millions of gorgeous sights to see across Europe, but not everyone knows about many hidden gems on the continent. Here are 10 unique places to go in Europe that are sure to wow you with their history and views.

1. Lyon, France

Lyon is France's third largest city and offers an exciting nightlife and a plethora of museums. The Musée des Beaux-Arts contains some amazing works of art from Picasso to Monet.

2. Basel, Switzerland

Basel lies in the northern corner of Switzerland, right next to Germany and France. It's location leads to a multi-cultural feel. The city is also home to 40 museums!

3. Freiburg, Germany

This university town is a gorgeous blend of medieval style and nature. It is considered one of the greenest cities because of how eco-friendly they are! It sits on the edge of the Black Forest and blends nature with a city feel. The university here is one of the oldest in Germany. There is a lot of history preserved here, from cobble-stone streets to a Gothic cathedral.

4. Cinque Terre, Italy

On the coast of the Italian Riviera lies a grouping of old villages that compose Cinque Terre. This area was once quite isolated and it has kept an atmosphere of remoteness. There are no cars allowed! You'll feel transported here.

5. Sintra, Portugal

Sintra lies close to Portugal's capital and is right on the ocean. The forested area is filled with colorful palaces such as the one above. Many take a one day trip from visiting Lisbon to drive through Sintra and see the many palaces and villas.

6. Lofoten, Norway

In the northern most part of Norway, this region lies in the arctic circle, but is surprisingly warm! It's pleasant climate is one of the largest temperature anomalies on our planet. There are gorgeous mountains and impressive views up here and you won't become a Popsicle!

7. Kotor, Montenegro

A beautiful city on the Mediterranean Sea with a lot of history. It has many medieval fortifications and churches that enhance the pictureque location.

8. Passau, Germany

Passau is a gorgeous place to wander in Germany. Museums, gorgeous architecture, three rivers, and amazing history; what more could you want?

9. Toledo, Spain

An ancient city that was once the home for all three Abrahamic religions. The history and structures of the city are enough to draw you in, but you'll stay for the rich culture.

10. Thessaloniki, Greece

This city is an excellent blend of old and new culture and architecture. There are many sights to see and a unique array of food and nightlife to enjoy. Enjoy some wine while looking at a gorgeous view of the Aegean Sea.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
