Last week I wrote a list of my favorite Halloween themed movies for the whole family. This week I want to focus on those Halloween films not so family friendly. These are the movies I wait all year to watch for that thrill of a good scare or some good suspense. While it’s true that these are not all ‘Halloween’ movies, they are most popular at this time of year and the ones I look forward to most.
1. Nightmare on Elm Street
Freddy Krueger should be enough said on this film. I wait all year for this film. I don’t care about the entire film series, but the first one is enough. Plus Johnny Depp’s death and being eaten by the bed is a nice touch. Cheesy, but what can you can expect from the ’80’s?
2.Scream
Neeve Campbell is the best thing that could happen in this film. The suspense of who the killer is kept on the edge of my seat the first time I watched it. I still enjoy the nice touch it has at then end of the film. Again, cheesy when it comes to the deaths, but over all a great film in my opinion.
3. Scream 4
You probably wonder why I skipped the other two films before I got to 4. Well, honestly, the other two tried to hard to mimic the first one and there was no real twist to the plot. The fourth takes place years later with Sidney and her cousin, Jill played by Emma Roberts. I like this one because I couldn’t guess the end and kept me guessing like the first.
4. Halloween
This film star, starring Jamie Lee Curtis, the origin scream queen, makes the perfect the suspense film. A babysitter being followed by masked killer. Who is Mike Myers? Why is he after this young woman? And why is it taking place on Halloween? It’s a classic film for Halloween, besides your classic monster films.
5. Sweeney Todd
Another film starring Johnny Depp, this is one the most horrific musicals on Broadway. A barber back for revenge against the pious judge of the London. A pie maker who makes the worst pies in London. The these team up killing the people of London and baking them into pies, who is to stop them? Whatever you do, don’t order the meat pies on Fleet Street.
6. Sleepy Hollow
Yet another film starring Johnny Depp, this version of Sleepy Hollow takes a different twist on the Halloween tale of Headless Horseman. Ichabod Crane is no schoolmaster, but a constable trying to change justice. He is sent to Sleepy Hollow to discover the cause of a supernatural being taking the heads of townspeople.
7. Van Helsing
This is maybe the only real ‘monster’ movie I have in this list. Van Helsing is the monster hunter who specializes in vampire hunting. He’s been after the head man himself. Dracula. This film takes an interesting turn for Van Helsing. Starring Kate Beckinsale and Hugh Jackman, it is a must watch on my list.
8. The Sixth Sense
This movie stars Haley Joel Osment, the kid who sees and converses ghosts. It also stars Bruce Willis. One of the ghosts Osment’s character converses with throughout the film. He helps Willis’s character comes to terms with his death.
9. The Good Son
A film starring Macaulay Culkin and Elijah Wood, this is film about two boys. They are cousins who end up spending time to together after Mark’s mother (played by Elijah Wood) dies of terminal illness. Henry (Culkin) has an obsession with death, but is it more than an obsession? This film is full of suspense and the end will shock you.
10. Crow
This has to be one of my favorite Halloween movies. Not only is it set on All Hallow’s Eve, but it touches on Native American folklore as well. A man and his fiancee is killed on All Hallow’s Eve. By the power of the crow, he comes back for vengeance on the men who murdered him. This is a touching film. I still haven’t seen the second and third installments, but there was a fourth one that I’ve seen. It follows a similar concept but doesn’t take a year for revenge and stars David Boreanaz (Angel from the popular tv series Buffy the Vampire Slayer).
