So you think you've packed everything, right? Well, since you still have some time before move-in day, let's be sure. Here are 10 things that might not have made your initial list, but you won't be able to live without:
1. A Meal Plan
Even if you’re going to live in an on-campus apartment, it’s good to have a meal plan for the first year. Sometimes you’ll have a class around breakfast, lunch, or dinner time, and you’ll want to just pop into a dining hall and eat. If you’re the type who likes to pack lunch, consider purchasing a meal plan with fewer meals to save money while still allowing yourself to get coffee in the morning or breakfast on the go.
2. A Vacuum & Duster
This is an item that I found myself using all the time. It doesn’t matter if you have carpeted or hard floors, they’ll get disgusting over time. The same thing applies to your desk, tables and shelves. Having a vacuum and duster allows you to keep your floors clean and prevent yourself from getting sick due to dust, etc.
3. Plastic Drawers
On-campus housing will typically come with a dresser, but plastic drawers have endless possibilities. You can use them to store extra clothes, shoes, medicine, snacks, bathroom stuff, school supplies or makeup. They’re typically inexpensive at Walmart or Target.
4. Shower Shoes
It doesn’t matter if you’re sharing a bathroom with 50 people or two people. Shower shoes are less than five dollars almost everywhere, and they’ll keep you from getting any kind of bacterial infection. It’s worth it to buy a pair from your local Dollar Store.
5. A Quality Pair Of Sneakers
You know you’ll be walking to and from class, sports games, events at the student center, etc., so why not be comfortable? Get yourself a pair of sneakers that you know will last at least one year. Your feet will thank you.
6. A Rain Jacket, Umbrella and Rain Boots
No matter where you live, it’s going to rain at some point. Keep yourself from being that poor soul who has a hoodie over their head in the rain. Invest in a rain jacket and rain boots that you can pair with any outfit, and keep an umbrella in your backpack. In Tampa, for example, no USF student would be caught dead without these essentials, as it rains all the time!
7. A Good-Sized Duffle Bag
Whether you’re staying at a friend’s house overnight or going home for Thanksgiving, this item will come in handy more than once. It’s an essential for every student, whether your home is 30 minutes away or a few states away.
8. At Least One Professional Outfit
Many freshmen forget about this one. You’d be surprised how many classes require presentations, or how many organizations require interviews. Besides, you’ll probably interview for a job more than once throughout your college career. Make sure to have at least one go-to outfit for these occasions. It’s better to be overdressed than underdressed!
9. A Mini Fan
Depending on where you live, you may or may not have control of the temperature in your room. This can be an issue if you prefer certain temperatures when you’re sleeping, studying, etc. Having a small mini fan that you can clip onto your desk or stand up on a table will put you in control and keep you comfortable.
10. A Portable Cell Phone Charger
Though most campuses are pretty good about having outlets everywhere, it can be hard to claim one. Especially if you’re in the library or in the middle of a class when your phone is about to die, this will be a life-saver. You can find these online pretty much anywhere, and they’re relatively inexpensive. Make sure to always charge them overnight so you don’t get stuck with a dead phone, a dead portable charger, and no outlet. It happens, trust me!
