Summer is probably one of the most exciting times of the year. The kids are home for summer vacation, college students are just looking for a good time, and families are looking for great places to take a family vacay.
People tend to travel the country, if not the world. They try new things, explore different cultures, eat exotic foods, and simply trying to make the most of their summer vacation by seizing every day as an adventure.
However, if you happen to be a Houston native (quite like myself), you may want to do everything but stay in the city this summer if you feel you've done everything our city has to offer.
I can assure you there are much more fun festivities to partake in, and this list only names a few of exciting things the city of Houston has to offer.
1. Houston Museum of Natural Science
Summer is the perfect time to take advantage of free admission times at the museum, and a great way to get cultured.
2. Hermann Park
One of the most iconic places on this list, Herman Park has a miniature train that runs for two miles, and costs less than $5.
3. Explore the downtown tunnel system
Surprisingly, many Houstonians have no idea this system exists. However, I think this “Must-Do” speaks for itself, because who doesn’t want to explore an unknown, underground tunnel system?
4. Hotel Galvez Tours
I'm personally not a fan of hauntings. Ghosts, spirits, etc aren't on my list of favorites, and I'm certainly not excited to learn they actually haunt some of Galveston’s hotels! However, if you enjoy being frightened, then this would definitely be a fun way to heighten your summer.
5. Visit Pleasure Pier
This is a fun way to enjoy the beach, and get on some great amusement park rides!
6. Houston International Jazz Festival
Celebrating all things jazz, this three-day August event will be music to your ears. Take in the sights and sounds at the Bayou Music Center in Downtown Houston, and sample music from around the world.
7. Shows at Miller Outdoor Theater
Bring a chair or a blanket to this popular venue in Hermann Park and enjoy a free performance.
On any given day/evening, the theater might be offering a children’s play or a music show, classical concert, dance performance, classic play, or anything in between!
8. Bike Riding, Picnicking and More in Buffalo Bayou Park
Explore the natural beauty of Buffalo Bayou as you walk, bike or picnic through this 160-acre park.
9. Tour St. Arnold's Brewery
The crew at St.Arnold’s runs a first class tour, complete with tastings and snacks at the end. With an approaching expansion in the works, even more brew fans will be able to enjoy the city's largest independent brewery.
10. Go Sailing on Clear Lake
A popular spot for launching on weekends, a sunny day finds the lake (which empties into Trinity Bay and, ultimately, the Gulf of Mexico) packed with boats of all varieties.
Slip into one of the side coves and inlets for some relaxation. Better yet, pull up to one of the numerous bars and restaurants.
11. Project Row Houses
Located in the heart of Third Ward, Project Row Houses is a community based arts and culture non-profit. PRH hopes to revitalize, preserve and celebrate art and education in this predominately African-American community.
These houses are free to visit Wednesday through Sunday.
