While most middle schoolers had their emo or rebellious phase, I had my “I’m obsessed with 80s movies” phase. I was strongly convinced that this was the time period I was meant to be living in, and no one could have convinced me to think any other way. To my friends and family, I apologize for you having to deal with this for two and a half years.
Although the obsession has died down, there are still several movies I remember watching that will always stick out to me no matter what. Here are some of the top 10 movies from the 80s that should be at the top of your watch list.
1. "Stand By Me" (1986)
This is a classic "coming-of-age" film that anyone can connect to their lives, as well as see themselves in any of the characters. And, of course, a great reminder that we’ve “never had friends like the ones we had when we were twelve”.
2. "The Breakfast Club" (1985)
Who could forget about this classic? We’ve got our ultimate squad goals here to show us how no matter the diversity of a group of people, new friendships can always form from it.
3. "The Goonies" (1985)
Chunk doing the iconic truffle shuffle is all we need to make our lives complete.
4. "Ferris Bueller’s Day Off" (1986)
This is our ultimate guide when it comes to faking sickness and goals for taking a day off from school. At some point, you’ve either tried to or have successfully had your own “day off” like Ferris. Of course, it could never be the same.
5. "The Lost Boys" (1987)
The original "Twilight", with vampires, stakes, and a hint of romance. What more could you ask for in a horror movie?
6. "Back to the Future" (1985)
Marty McFly relived our dreams of going back in time in this classic movie; and with enough humor to go around, this is one movie that you definitely can’t say no to watching!
7. "Pretty in Pink" (1986)
Duckie...enough said.
8. "Sixteen Candles" (1984)
I'm still waiting for my crush to kiss me on my birthday while we eat cake, but not for my family to forget my birthday. How awful would that be?
9. "The Princess Bride" (1987)
If you have yet to watch this movie, that is absolutely, totally, and in all other ways, inconceivable.
