Makeup bought at the drugstore can be life changing or it can be a waste of money. Some drugstore makeup is just as good, or even better than fancy Sephora products, at half the price! On the other hand, some drugstore makeup is just trash. Here's a list of some of the best and worst drug store makeup out there
Dope
1. Maybelline 24HR Gel Eyeshadows
These last FOREVER. Their full name is a bit ridiculous, Maybelline Eyestudio Colortattoo Leather 24HR Cream Gel Eye Shadow, but they're actually amazing. I don't even use eye shadow primer when I wear these, they're amazing. My go to eye look when I'm in a rush is the bronze color all over my lid and the dark brown color on the outer corner. These are very pigmented and long lasting.
2. e.l.f. and Wet & Wild brushes
e.l.f. and Wet & Wild are some of the least expensive brands but they have some QUALITY products! Not everything they make is great, but the brushes from both brands are amazing. Almost all of my brushes come from these two brands and they work just as well as expensive brushes.
3. Revlon Mascaras
My favorite mascara is the Volume + Length mascara (the blue lid), but they're all pretty similar. The product is fairly similar but they have different brushes. Either way, this is quality mascara. It works really well and stays on all day. I definitely see an improvement with my lashes and they usually look good all day.
4. Nyx Micro Brow Pencil
This brow pencil is often compared to Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz, but the Nyx product is half the price! This pencil is super easy to work with even if you have never tried to fill in your brows before. The pencil is very thin and comes with a spoolie on the end to help you shape your brows. They also have a lot of color choices!
5. Nyx Away We Glow Liquid Highlighter
I bought this on a whim and had no expectations, and I was blown away. I've never bothered with highlighter, it never seemed to do much for me. This product is fantastic, it takes two seconds to put some on and blend it out. You can get a really obvious or subtle look with this by blending more or less! I absolutely love it, especially for the price.
DUDS
1. Elf HD Mattifying Cream Foundation
This is high key garbage. The consistency is too thick and they only have four shades, none of which look good. I wore this in high school because it was cheap and it never did me any favors.
2. Pixi Beauty Mesmerizing Mineral Palette
This was the biggest letdown. I had high expectations since Pixi Beauty is on the expensive side of drug store make up, but these are honestly crap. The pigmentation is awful and the colors are not unique. I got the shades pictured in the center and yet all the shades appeared nearly the same. Not worth the money!
3. Nyx Conceal, Correct, Contour Palette
I love Nyx most of the time, but this palette was just unusable for me. The product was way too thick. All of the shades but the darkest are nearly identical and will do nothing different for you. Do not waste your money, this will accomplish nothing.
4. Maybelline Master Camo Color Correcting Pen (Orange)
To be fair, I'm not a huge fan of color correction to begin with, it's difficult to find a product that actually does anything and is possible to cover up. I used the orange pen (on the right) to try to cover my under-eye bags, and then placed my concealer over it. I couldn't see a difference and I just ended up using more concealer. A waste of money in my opinion.
5. Maybelline Define-A-Line Eye Liner
This eyeliner is impossible to get on. It is so dry, even when it is brand new. It takes about four attempts to get a decently visible line, and it rarely looks good. It also does NOT last long. It would always reappear on my eyelid. I used this in early high school and I regret it a lot. Learn from my mistakes.
I hope you can learn from my mistakes and successes! I love drug store makeup, but not all of it is worth it.
