1. Make and memorize your resume.
Before going to an interview you have to make an up-to-date resume. The object of the resume is to give your employer an idea of who you are. Be sure to include any community service work and references that will speak highly of you. Additionally, it is important that you have it memorized. Your future employer may ask you questions in regards to your resume.
2. Clear and update your social media account.
This is starting to become a big problem for everyone. Your social media account will tell your employer everything there is to know about you. In this era, social media has become the reasons for divorce, broken friendships and now leaving people jobless. So before pressing “post” make sure that there is nothing that you wouldn't want your boss to see.
3. Be prepared to answer any question.
The goal of an interview is for them to know who you really are. They may ask a question in regards to your resume, but do not be surprised if they ask you what your favorite TV show is, or what are your hobbies. These are all fair questions because they want to know who they are hiring and if they can work with you. Be honest and be prepared for any questions.
4. Practice making eye contact .
When talking to your friends or family, we are very comfortable to the point where we do not realize if we are making eye contact or not. The relationship is so close that it may not matter. In fact, it doesn’t matter until you have an interview. Be sure to always look that person in their eyes when answering questions. This shows confidence and respect; two of the many traits every employer looks for.
5. Work on your body language.
Body language says it all. It can let the person know, if you are being forced to be there, or if you actually want to be there. When shaking their hand make sure it is a firm grip, followed by a confident “hello.” When sitting down, make sure to sit straight up and look comfortable. You want your employer to know you are confident about everything.
6. Dress for success.
This is very hard depending on what job interview you go to. Most of the time people look up or ask other people what to wear. You may find the same answers like “make sure your belt matches your shoes,” or “wear a tie.” Just make sure to dress professional. In my opinion, we all have that one outfit that when we put in on, we feel invincible. I would recommend wearing that outfit when going to the interview.
7. Arrive early.
How early is early you ask? Well I say about half an hour early. However, do not arrive early to just sit and wait. When arriving, introduce yourself to everyone, including security. Be aware of your surroundings, and pay attention to the small details. This is potentially the place you will be spending a majority of your life at. So arrive early and make yourself comfortable, but not too comfortable.
8. Make a good first impression on everyone.
A simple hello will not hurt. A smile can change a mood, and a positive attitude can be contagious. Making a good first impression can help you out a lot. You will stand out from someone who is there for the same reason you are. You want people to say “I rather work with that person.” Good impression won't let people forget you.
9. Feel confident, speak confident, and don’t stress.
When you are done, do not touch your cellphone just yet. Be sure to firmly shake the person’s hand and show no emotion. Even though the interview may have gone bad, you want the person to feed off your confidence. When walking out, say goodbye and keep a smile on your face. Most importantly, when asked how the interview went. Answer the question with honesty and with confidence.
