10 Life Lessons as Told by Christmas Movies

With the holidays just around the corner, the T.V. schedule is flooding with Christmas movies. As we gather around with family and hot chocolate to watch our favorites this season, remember that each Christmas movie has a lesson to be learned. We've grown up watching these movies. Every Christmas we become more familiar with our red nosed reindeer, talking snowmen, and claymations of Santa Claus. Every year we remember more words and can join in on more songs, but what have these movies really taught us? Even if we didn't realize it, years ago when we sat and watched these movies for the first time, we learned valuable life lessons. As we finish up with finals and sit down for our hundreth viewing of Rudolph, Elf, and other classics, let's not forget how these movies subtly shaped our moral compass.

1. You're never too young to save the day. Home Alone 1990

2. Love can make anything beautiful. A Charlie Brown Christmas 1965

3. Everyone needs a day off now and then... even Santa. The Year Without a Santa Claus 1974

4. Seeing is not believing. The Polar Express 2004

5. So have faith by believing in the things you can't always see. Miracle on 34th Street 1947

6. Sometimes your life can change completely in a single moment. Sometimes that change can be the most magical thing that's ever happened to you. The Santa Clause 1994

7. Smiling is contagious. Elf 2003

8. "Some people are worth melting for." Frozen 2013

9. Everyone is capable of showing love and kindness. Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas 2000

10. Never be ashamed of what makes you different. Your differences are what make you special. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer 1964

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
