10 Lessons Learned From Mom In 20 Years, Even If Some Of Them Were Painful To Hear
Madison Zegarlowicz

My mother is my best friend. I share everything with her.

Well... almost everything.

Enough to where she knows what's important, can help me through a hard time, and then hit me with her motherly wisdom. In sharing so much with her over my twenty years on this earth, she has given me my fair share of congratulations, scoldings, and even a few "I'm disappointed in you"s here and there. Even so, I am so happy she has been here for it all.

Here are ten pieces of wisdom my wonderful, loving, amazing mother has graced me with in my (tumultuous) twenty years.

Chances are, these will help you (almost) as much as they helped me.

1. "Honey, he is not worth it!"

This was definitely one that hurt to hear. When I was in love, followed by a hard breakup, having Mom tell me that the boy I loved wasn't worth crying over sent me into a frenzy. Now that it's all said and done, I'm glad she did. If anyone had the guts to tell me that, and then be right about it, it's my mother.

2. Even when you don't think caffeine is the answer, you're wrong, because it is

My mom will be the first to tell you that a cup of coffee fixes (almost) everything

3. The difference between "you're" and "your"

4. "I will always be here, even when it gets bad."

Even if I did something bad and need a ride, Mom will be there, no questions asked.

5. It's okay to laugh at yourself sometimes

My mom and I have laughed until we cried in the middle of a grocery store (more than once). Having my mother reassure me that it's okay to make a fool of myself sometimes made me a better, less-stressed person.

6. Let love find you, don't chase it

After that hard breakup happened, I just wanted to be happy again by any means necessary. Mom helped me understand that the right man would come along someday, and it may be when I least expected it. (Spoiler alert, she was right.)

7. There is nothing that a nap can't fix

8. "Don't let people take advantage of you."

From friends, to boyfriends, to everything in between, my mom has been here for it all. This includes some situations that I'm sure she would have rather not seen me in. As my mom, though, she knows I have a giving heart. She has to remind me every now and then not to let people stretch me too thin.

9. There is nothing that you can't handle

I've been through my fair share of hardships, but Mom always reassures me that I'm stronger than I think I am.

10. "There is nothing to gain from being someone you're not."

This one has been said quite a few times since I started college and had a few times where I became a person I didn't recognize. Mom knew, because she knows everything, that this person wasn't me.

I just need to be reminded every once in awhile.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
