Here is what I learned from the book “Really Important Stuff My Dog Has Taught Me” by Cynthia L. Copeland, along with my favorite quotes from it. (Plus a really cute puppy gif just to brighten your day).
1. Joy isn’t circumstantial.
“(A dog) fully embraces every moment of his day, assuming that something wonderful is just about to happen.”
2. Never miss a chance to show someone you love them.
“Dogs never withhold affection, nor do they suddenly decide we’re not worthy of their love.”
3. Embrace life challenges with enthusiasm and strength.
“With a combination of patience and perseverance, dogs turn obstacles into opportunities and show us what can be accomplished by simply sticking with it.”
4. Balance is the key to a good life.
“For (dogs), an afternoon spent lying outside in the warm sun with a friend is just as valuable and meaningful as time spent embarking on an adventure”
5. Know your self-worth.
“No dog compares himself to other dogs… Your pup feels valued and worthy just the way he is, deserving of your love, attention, and praise.”
6. Don’t take small joys for granted.
“Because they are not burdened by what could be, dogs are fully able to enjoy what is.”
7. Be intentional and passionate.
“A dog craves purpose. He wants to expend energy, solve problems, engage with others, and embark on interesting adventures.”
8. Don't waste time and energy holding onto hate.
“(Dogs) resolve conflicts quickly and move on, letting go of negative feelings to focus on happier, more important things.”
9. Live each day like it is your last.
“(A dog) has no regrets over what happened yesterday, and he doesn’t fret about tomorrow. He lives in the present, eager and optimistic.”
10. Don’t worry about what you cannot change.
“Dogs cope, they adapt, they look for reasons to wag their tails.”
