In honor of the recent Women's March, here are some books featuring feminist themes. They are mostly Young Adult sprinkled in with some autobiographies.
1. "Exit Pursued by a Bear" by E.K. Johnston
Hermione Winters, after being drugged and raped at cheer camp and becoming pregnant, refuses to be a victim. Her family, friends, and community are supportive of her as she decides how to handle her pregnancy and tries to remember who raped her.
2. "Moxie" by Jennifer Mathieu
At Vivian Carter's high school, where sexual harassment is rampant, she decides to start and distribute secret feminist magazine, inspired by her mother, who was a punk rock Riot Girl in the '90s.
3. "Juliet Takes a Breath" by Gabby Rivera
Juliet, a Puerto Rican lesbian from the Bronx, goes to Portland, Oregon to intern for the author of her favorite book after coming out to her family didn't go so well.
4. "Wolf by Wolf" by Ryan Graudin
In an alternate 1956 in which the Third Reich won World War II, Yael, a Jewish teen who can shapeshift, enters a motorcycle competition as previous winner Adele Wolfe, so she can meet Hitler when she wins and assassinate him.
5. "Everything Must Go" by Jenny Fran Davis
Flora Goldwasser chooses to attend an alternative Quaker boarding school called Quare Academy in Hudson Valley rather than her Manhattan prep school because her history tutor, who she had a crush on, intended to teach there. When he decides to stay in Manhattan at the last minute, Flora goes to Quare anyway and learns important things about herself.
6. "Not Your Sidekick" by C.B. Lee
Jessica Tran is a regular girl in a family of superheroes. To spite her parents, she decides to intern for a supervillain. It also doesn't hurt that Abby, a girl she likes from school, also works for that supervillain.
7. "#GIRLBOSS" by Sophia Amoruso
#GIRLBOSS chronicles Sophia Amoruso's journey from selling vintage clothing on eBay to being the Founder, CEO, and Creative Director of the fashion brand NastyGal.
8. "When Dimple Met" Rishi by Sandhya Menon
Before starting college at Stanford, Dimple Shah attends a web development summer program, eager to get away from her parents, who are intent on fixing her up with the "Ideal Indian Husband." Rishi also attends that program because his parents, who are friends with Dimple's, assured him his future wife will be there.
9. "Fashion Is Freedom: A Girl from Tehran and Her Rise to the Runway" by Tala Raassi
This is the inspirational story of Tala Raassi's rise from an Iranian teen who got arrested for wearing a miniskirt to a party to a designer whose swimwear line sponsored the Miss Universe pageant.
10. "Piecing Me Together" by Renee Watson
"Piecing Me Together" centers around Jade, who is a black girl from a low-income neighborhood attending a predominantly white, expensive private school on a scholarship. Jade wishes adults would see her as someone who has something to offer, and not just the person who needs to be helped.
