I really played myself here. If you didn't learn how to cook before moving off-campus like myself, this list might change your life!
I'm actually coming at you right now from my very first off-campus apartment! I'm living in Athens while I help out with online orientation! I wanted to be in town to be in the right headspace to help (and to get away from home and have good wifi quality, as my whole family won't be connected.)
Anyway, I've never learned to cook! I can follow a recipe, sure, but I haven't done it super often! So it was super daunting and intimidating to grocery shop and try to make myself meals. However, there are several hacks you can take advantage of, such a making a whole recipe even if it's for a family of four and feeding yourself for days! Or, of course, stealing food from your home whenever you go home to visit!
Anyway, here are some things I think I can even make! I'm sure you can find simple recipes online to help you out!
2. Bagel, well, anything!
GiphyBagels are so versatile. Sure, you can eat it with butter or whatever, but what about an egg bacon and cheese sandwich? Or a ham lettuce and tomato sandwich? The possibilities are endless! You can even put the new seasoning I keep seeing on TikTok on it called "Everything but the Bagel Sesame" from Trader Joe's.
3. Chicken Parmesan!
GiphySeason those breadcrumbs, baby! Then just butter sauce and cheese! Seriously, it's so easy, and delicious!
4. Broccoli!
GiphyWater. Butter. Salt. Broccoli. That's it, y'all. Add some lemon or garlic powder if you're feeling feisty.
5. Baked Potatoes!
GiphyGet a potato. Wrap that thing in tin foil and YEET it into the oven. You're welcome.
6. Quesadillas!
GiphyQuesadillas can be basic, like just a tortilla and cheese, or you could essentially put whatever you want in there! I personally love green peppers and chicken, but you can make it your own!
7. Pasta!
GiphyYou can go so many ways with pasta: soup! Fettuccine! Honestly, just cook the pasta and then add whatever you want to it!
8. (Scrambled) Eggs!
GiphyI learned to make scrambled eggs in grade school: eggs, a splash of milk, and a pinch of salt! I also love to throw cheese and ham into my scrambled eggs to make me feel even more like a chef. Sunny-side up eggs are also super easy to make. Same with hard-boiled!
10. Cornbread!
GiphyThe mix is super cheap, and there are, like, three ingredients. You'll have it for a long time, so with every meal just microwave and smear some butter on it and you've got some good stuff right there.
I hope you don't go hungry and learn to branch off from these simple dishes as you continue to learn and grow as a cook! *chef's kiss*
If you're reading this and you're still eating at home or the dining hall foods: relish in the glory days.
