Moving away from home, I understood college would be a life-changing experience. While we all complain about empty bank accounts and difficult curriculum, I wouldn't change college for the world. It's easy to forget the luxuries we have to attend university and pursue a degree while preparing for the future.
Here are 10 things all college students take for granted because sometimes we forget how easy we have it.
1. Independence
Free at last. Free at last. Thank God Almighty, I'm free at last. There's nothing more I could love about college than being on my own. While I do miss my family, I do not regret attending the best school in the country. The independence for me to choose my own major, be involved in certain organizations, or pick up Insomnia Cookies at 3 a.m. is absolutely amazing. College gives everyone new opportunities to start over. This is a chance to write your own story.
2. No Dress Code
Sweatshirt. Check. Leggings. Check. Fuzzy socks. Double check.
If you want to show up to class in your pajamas, do it. The number of times I've rolled out of bed in my sweatshirt and leggings from the night before surpasses how many times I've gotten ready for the day. You can wear jeans and a T-shirt or be business casual. Professors don't care what you look like. It's all up to you.
3. All-Access Meal Plans
Some colleges require freshman to have all-access meal plans for their first year. At first, I was a little resentful of the big money price tag Alabama had for the freshman meal plan. After living on campus for three months, I can definitely say the money is worth it. All three dining halls have numerous options for pizza-lovers and health addicts. Oh, and don't miss out on the unlimited soft serve either.
4. Free Transportation
Rain or shine, the Crimson Ride is a lifesaver. Without campus transportation, I would be walking 20 miles on average to class every day. Bus drivers save us money on parking passes and parking tickets. Though some buses can be a little late, you'll thank these drivers for taking you back to the dorm at 2 a.m. after a frat party. Be sure to download the Rider app to check out your campus routes.
5. Dining Dollars
Dining dollars are a girl's best friend. Each semester UA grants students $350 dollars to spend at on-campus dining locations such as Chick-fil-A, Starbucks, Panda Express, or Subway. Going to the Ferg for lunch is way too easy when you're craving waffle fries and Polynesian sauce everyday. It's not an exaggeration you'll mistake ACT card for your debit card more than once. I tried paying for food back home and realized I was using my college ID at the grocery store. How embarrassing.
6. Adjusted Schedules
The freedom to have class at 8 a.m. or 5 p.m. allows everyone a chance to make time for themselves. You can create your schedule however you want, and take as many hours as you'd like. The trick? DON"T OVERSLEEP. Make sure you set alarms to get to class on time. The struggle to wake up for those 8 a.m.'s are most likely caused for staying out late on Thursday night.
7. College Athletics
Nothing says college like game days in the fall. Alabama football is a Southern tradition, and all day is spent tailgating on the Quad. I love being a student for the opportunity to spend time with new friends and eat free food. This year, I was able to buy five football tickets for $15 total. How about them apples? Come join the Crimson family and watch the Tide roll to victory.
8. People, People, Everywhere
38,000 students is overwhelming. Really overwhelming. The first few weeks I thought I was swimming in a sea with no where to belong. After connecting with some classmates and getting to know my professors, I knew UA was the place for me. Having friends to meet you at the dining hall or stay up past midnight to study for an exam is the best way to build relationships.
9. University Recreation
Oh, the Freshman 15. We all know what it is, yet still gravitate towards the free pizza at Fresh Foods. One of the things I'm working towards this semester is spending more time at the gym to build better health habits. There is no excuse for anyone to miss a workout with the outstanding facilities of University Recreation. My campus gym offers group exercise classes, personal trainers, and even a smoothie bar!
10. Endless Possibilities
Setting up for success is a little difficult when you try doing it on your own. Alabama's campus partners and outreach programs have allowed me to find a path towards my career goals. There are endless possibilities for college students to professional, social, and political organizations. No matter what you choose, make sure it makes you happy.
