During the stress of finals week, we weren’t really thinking about all the freedom we would have once summer came along. Here are ten fun and inexpensive things to do when you aren’t working or worrying about summer classes.
1. Go Thrift shopping.
No matter where you’re at there’s bound to be a thrift shop nearby. You can always find unique furniture for your apartment or even some fun and cheap clothing you can’t find in the modern day mall. Give yourself a $10 limit and see what you can come up with.
2. Cool off with water.
Go swimming whether it's in a pool or ocean it’s the perfect way to do something fun without spending money. Have a water balloon fight with friends, or play in a fountain or go buy a cheap slip n’ slide with friends (be a kid again). Beat the heat any way you can and get a tan at the same time.
3. Go stargazing.
You could park your car outside with friends or a significant other, get a telescope or binoculars, crank up some music and enjoy the night stars. I personally like to climb on top of my jeep and look at them. It's cheap and peaceful.
4. Have a slumber party.
Invite your best friends to sleep over at your house, middle school style. You can watch movies, gossip, and eat all the junk food that your hearts desire.
5. Get physical.
Go outside for a run, ride/rent a bike with some friends, try a new form of exercise. Ever been curious about yoga, Pilates, spin class or something else? The summer is a great time to explore something new and see if it’s a fit. A lot of places give free classes to see how you like it too.
6. Try a new idea: breakfast and a movie.
Just wake up? Call a friend and meet at a local place that serves 24/7 breakfasts ASAP. Then amble over to the theater and enjoy whatever movie is playing next Added bonus: breakfast is cheaper than dinner, and matinees are cheaper than the later shows. Plus, the theatre is probably empty.
7. Volunteer.
Think of the last time you volunteered somewhere? Didn't you feel great afterward? No matter where you live, there are undoubtedly places that could use your time, energy, and smarts. Plus, you can use it on your resume later. (you can always help at the local animal shelter.)
8. Go camping.
Camping during the school year can be a challenge, both because of your workload and because of the weather. Utilize all that summer has to offer for the great outdoors and it can be really fun and inexpensive.
9. Make art.
Paint a picture or canvas, make pottery, sketch pictures in a notebook, do DIY projects from Pinterest, or even color in a coloring book. Let your creativity run wild by being artistic.
10. Go to the bookstore.
You don’t have to buy anything. Just grab a coffee, sit in the comfy chairs, enjoy the A/C, and read any book or magazine that you’d like. Unwind after a long day by sitting down with a good book. Pick out a New York Times Best Seller, an old classic, or a how-to book to open your mind and learn something new.
