We are getting old

10 BFA Fairfax Things You Forgot About

Recently when I went snowboarding, I was approached by a teen asking me if I went to BFA Fairfax. I was wearing the Nordic ski coat I received way back when, and he told me he was a junior. It dawned on me I was a junior too but in college, and oh my, how time has passed.

This brought to mind how it feels like just yesterday I was a freshman in high school, and college was the last thing on my mind. I was at my small town high school worrying about keeping up with all the latest trends, attending basketball games, and making sure I wasn't missing an episode of Jersey Shore.

There were so many things I started remembering. So here are 10 things maybe you forgot about too, at BFA Fairfax.

1. Do The John Wall

Even though this was 8th grade for some of us, this was one of the most important dances to know, compared to the Dougie. I remember staying after school like a cool kid, and the basketball players playing this song and teaching everyone how to do it. This song was everything. Take a listen to it, and I guarantee it'll bring you right back and you'll remember that dance.

2. The Roller Coaster at Basketball Games

I remember seeing all the older kids start this tradition. At basketball games, specifically girls basketball games, a bunch of people would sit together and be the mega fans. For this particular "cheer" people would put their hands out and start as if they were going up the roller coaster, and then would come to the dip. They would go forward and side to side and scream "whoa" the entire time. It was quite the honor when I finally wormed my way in there after a few years passed.

3. The Powder Puff Game

Before getting its name changed and moved inside, we had the annual Powder Puff game for homecoming. Upperclassman vs lowerclassman. Man, was I ready for this? Little did I know I would get a bloody nose the first play, but this was wild. The upperclassman were ruthless and kicked our butts. I remember also, of course, all us girls would squeal at the thought of the football players being our coaches too. Even though I got to play in other games, I'll always remember my first one in the mud and rain and getting my butt kicked by the older girls.

4. The DC

As the years passed the DC got a little smaller, and I'm not sure if it still exists today, but I remember the DC, also known as D****eb*g Central. When I was a freshman, I think they were truly at their best. This was the mega fans. They would bring out newspapers to games during the reading of the opposing team's roster. They would do the roller coaster, and airball, and wave their hands during other teams shots. They were the best.

5. The Enosburg Rivalry

Now this rivalry was usually during basketball games, for both male and female teams. These games were wild. Major cheering back and forth would go on, and it was never a dull game when we played each other. Even though at one time it came to physical blows for one of the games, (still some confusion there), it was a friendly rivalry and all just fun and games in the end, and I met some of the most wonderful people from Enosburg, who I'll never forget.

6. House Parties/Bonfires/Field Parties

There was nothing like a good party in Fairfax. They stayed relatively small, and you got to see your friends from Essex, Westford, St. Albans, and even Lamoille sometimes. These were the best. Since Vermont was pretty small, you'd usually see the same people, and whether it was in a house, a bonfire, or a field, it was small and you never had a bad time. P.s I sincerely apologize to everyone who came to my last party in high school, but man was that a hell of a party.

7. Angelinas Pizza

Maybe you never got to try it, but this was the best pizza in town (sort of) I thought. Even though Angelinas was in Cambridge, it was still the best pizza around. After a long day of snowboarding, or a Friday night sleepover, they had the perfect pizza. I completely forgot about it until I was heading to Smuggs and saw it was still running. For those who still live around there, please keep going there so it never goes out of business. They were the best.

8. Steeples

If you were allowed to stay after school or had some type of sports practice, going to Steeples was a must. It was just down the hill and also had the walkable path there. Going there after school and getting snacks and soda was a must. You felt so cool heading down there with your crew, especially if you had a car with all your windows down and blasting your music.

9. Champlain Valley Fair

The fair usually was around the time school started, and going with all your friends and showing off your summer best was very important. Going to the fair with your squad, and seeing all your friends right before school starts was the perfect social event that tied the summer together. You'd see your friends from different towns, see that cute guy who went to another school and see how tan everybody got over the summer.

10. The Pink Glove Dance

I stumble upon this every now and then, but it's something that always takes me back. There was a wide range of faces from little kids to seniors. This video was for breast cancer and showcased many faces. From Fred, the librarians, the national honor society, chorus, the senior room, the graduating class that year, Frode and Lena the exchange students, and Dustin, Levi, and Ben shooting pink gloves out of some sort of thing. This video had it all. It was played to Taio Cruz's "Dynamite." I encourage EVERYONE to go back and look at it and see if you spot yourself in this video!

There you have it. 10 things you forgot about Fairfax. I hope this brought a smile to your face and a laugh on remembering on all these things you may have forgotten about it. As time goes on and we get older into our adult lives, we will always have these memories. Cheers.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
