Do It For The (Insert Philanthropy Cause Here)

We all have some sort of connection to each and every philanthropy on campus. Whether it is for Alzheimer's disease research or the Ronald McDonald House, we are all affected in one way or another by these causes.

As we enter the middle of the fall semester, we also enter the busiest part of the semester with Greek philanthropies. It is a crazy and exciting time. Different chapters participating in one philanthropy, raising money for a great cause, right Wrong.

Lately, it has become more and more evident that chapters participate in other chapters' philanthropic events just to "win." I get it. We want better relations with other organizations. We want to get to know certain brothers and sisters more. We want to have better socials with different organizations. We want, we want, we want.

Since when did we become so selfish and self-absorbed? Since when did philanthropies become all about us? Since when did our desires and wants become more important than the cause that we are working towards?

Since I joined Greek life last semester, participating in philanthropies was just a competition among Greek organizations to see who could be the better sorority or fraternity on campus. Don't get me wrong. I love a little friendly competition, but when the competition clouds the view of the overall goal, we need to reevaluate our motives for our participation.

When we are the organization hosting the event, we want organizations to come out to and participate in our philanthropies because they care about our cause. We want them to be as passionate about the cause as we are, even if it is only for a couple of days. So why is it that when it comes to us participating in philanthropies, we forget about the purpose of the event and all we care about is winning? Is it really that much to ask that for three short days we go out hard for a cause because we are truly passionate for raising awareness for breast cancer or fundraising for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital?

I am not trying to rag on the Greek community. But I believe that we, as chapters and as individual Greek women and men, need a reminder of what it means to participate in other organization's philanthropies, and why it is that we even have these philanthropic events throughout the year. It means raising awareness, fundraising for research, searching for a cure, and showing and providing support.

Do it for the kids. Do it for the women. Do it for the veterans. Do it for the hungry. Do it for the disabled. Do it for the chance to make a change in the world.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
