The interesting hashtag came to my attention when I came across this image:
As a feminist, I could go off on a rant about how all men are inconsiderate pigs who can't tell their left hands from their right. But that's not what feminism is about, and that's what a disturbing number of people fail to realize.
Yes, the expectations do exist, however subtly or prominently in different locations, that a man hold open the door, hold the bags and give up their seat; but when did that become a burden? And so much of a burden that it had to be incorporated with much more serious issues associated with the lack of gender equality? The way I see it, holding the door open, holding bags and giving up a seat is a common human courtesy, not a gender binary. Believe it or not, women can hold open doors for men too, they can hold the bags, and they can kindly offer up their seat to a man. It's time to start having the mentality that you are simply doing these acts for another human being, not for a man or a woman. Do some women take advantage of masculinity? Yes they do. Do ALL women do it? No they don't. Just as I am sure that men aren't all tough meatheads who make it their life mission to break the heart of every girl they are with. The world isn't as black and white as this very inaccurate image.
The reason these traditions exist is because of the ways of times much older than the ones we live in. A world where women probably didn't drive or vote. Definitely a world in which marriage equality didn't exist. Just as many traditions have carried over from those times, this did too ever so slyly. Not only this, but some men WANT to appear masculine, therefore the opening of doors, the lifting of heavy bags, and the notion that they can handle standing up occurs. Of course, not all men want to shove that in everyone's faces. Nonetheless, how a desire to appear a certain way is discrimination against the male race is an anomaly to comprehend. The issues that women fight for are far more problematic than the simple human courtesies being complained about in that image. For example, getting paid differently for the same jobs. That is discrimination. This is just one of the issues involved in the crusade of feminism. I won't go listing all of them. In today's world, all the problems are known. They either don't have enough "officials" backing them or are simply not given enough importance. "Another problem for another day."
However, to expand on those old-fashioned traditions would just be to focus on the three things stated in the image. As most things go, the bigger picture needs to be looked at. So I looked into the website maggcom.com, where this image came from. Another image came to my attention:
"Why can't society let me"...? I'm sorry, I didn't realize that society literally had men tied down to the point where they couldn't do the things that are considered a "woman's job." It is one thing to play jokes on the movement of feminism, however it is another matter entirely to insinuate that men have boundaries when it comes to being successful in the work field and being a successful father and/or spousal figure. Sometimes, in order to be successful in one field, sacrifices do have to be made in the other. But hey, just ask the millions of women who have stayed at home to raise children, instead of going back to work, what that's like.
So save the woes of being "mancriminated." There's a reason the saying "It's a man's world" exists. It isn't because it is a world in which men aren't given an upper hand, that much I can definitely say. We aren't trying to undermine your existence on this planet by becoming superior beings. We only want to be equal and kindly ask that we be given the same courtesies as you do. And we are more than happy to extend the same courtesies back. Feminism isn't a war against the male gender. This isn't something we want to fight for against men. This is something we want to fight for with men.
Maggcom.com asks, "You want gender equality?" Why yes, I do. I'll take it in the largest size available.
