A New Beginning

9

Editor's note. Editor's note. Editor's note. Nope, no matter how many times I say it I'm not getting used to the fact that this is my responsibility. I'm not getting used to the fact that I'm the new Editor-in-chief, but I am.

I’m nervous and excited and a whole range of emotions. Oh and I guess it's important to say that I'm Alexandra Miller the new EIC, but call me Ally. Please.

Editor's note. Editor's note. Editor's note. No matter how many times I say it, I'm not getting used to the fact that this is my responsibility. I'm not getting used to the fact that I'm the new editor-in-chief. I’m nervous and excited, with a whole range of emotions. Oh, and I guess it's important to say that I'm Alexandra Miller the new EIC, but call me Ally. Please.

I am taking this, my first issue, to tell a little bit about myself. I'm a first year, physiological science major who enjoys dabbling in writing and other artsy things (thus The Odyssey). I'm in Kappa Delta Sorority, here at UCLA, and have loved every minute of it. My sisters and other people I've met through Greek life have truly made my college experience great and I know they'll continue to do so in the years to come.

I really wasn't sure that Greek life was for me, at first. After all, Greeks just party, right? Uh, no. Clearly, I was wrong, and I want to do everything I can to make sure that other people realize how wrong this is.

That's really my goal as editor of The Odyssey. I just want everyone to see how amazing Greek life is and understand what we're all about. I want to highlight exceptional people and houses to showcase the talents, intelligence and kindness within each sorority and fraternity on campus. I also hope to bring the Greek community together and promote unity among all houses. We, as Greeks, must accept and welcome each other before we can expect the rest of the world to do the same.

Keep in mind that if you want to show how amazing the UCLA Greek system is, you can apply to be a part of The Odyssey staff.  We are currently looking for writers and photographers. If you have any interest in being a part of our team, feel free to contact me! Being a part of this staff has changed my life and you have the opportunity to be a part of it, as well.

I’d also love to hear from anyone with suggestions about what should be included in our paper. We are always looking for new ideas and fresh opinions. The paper is new, and so am I, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
