I have a love-hate relationship with being a barista. I work for a drive-through-only coffee stand, and because of this, I don’t have to deal with as many struggles as baristas who work in actual stores do, i.e. misspelling names and people loitering in your lobby, but I still deal with a lot on a daily basis.
1. Mornings are not fun for anyone, including the barista, and especially on Mondays.
2. Changing your order while we're in the middle of marking your drink isn't cool.
3. Making "secret menu" drinks is annoying. Making Starbucks drinks at a non-Starbucks is also annoying.
4. Asking for frappuccinos at a non-Starbucks, however, is perhaps the most annoying thing.
5. Making dry cappuccinos sucks.
6. If you're ordering, then hang up your phone and keep your car window rolled down. We might have another question about your drink.
7. Tipping brings you good karma, so please try to do it, whether you're getting six drinks or one.
8. Baristas ask "Hot or iced?" so often that those are our top three-used words.
9. We often consume way more caffeine than we should.
10. Mumbling or soft-spoken customers are just as awful as rude ones.
11. Customers that are patient and understanding are the best...
12. ...and the nicest customers always deserve a little extra chocolate in their mocha.
13. People that pretend they know how to order coffee need to stop. An iced, no-foam cappuccino is not a thing.
At the end of the day, it's a paying job, but I should be getting paid a lot more.
